This is Ken Zuhr! One of our members.

A few weeks ago Ken made a hole in one on #5 to *complete* the incredible feat of making a hole in one on *ALL 4 OF OUR PAR 3’S*

Talk about a feat! Ken has been a member for almost 16 years and is always ready to tell a story! He’s got a lot of good ones! Next time you see him, ask him about his hole in one! (Or all 4 of them). That’s legendary!

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, grandfathers, and father figures who make our club so special.

Introducing - Mark Thrower - Head Chef of Maple Chase Golf and Country Club. He brings over three decades of experience coupled with culinary education from Central Piedmont and Cornell to our wonderful golf and dining setting. His early career was enlightened while working under a nationally recognized chef in Banner Elk, whose inspiration led to chef Marks’s successes at an esteemed NC mountain country club, catering at The Masters, and more recently, at one of North Carolina’s largest vineyards, earning a top 100 ‘Best Places to Eat’ from Yelp. Mark creates dishes that are grounded in culinary technique while rooted in Southern cuisine which he calls ‘Sophisticated Southern. Locally grown inspired dishes he takes to heart as he and his wife Katherine own a small farm in Stokes County. Chef Mark told us he is ‘excited and honored to advance the success of Maple Chase’s culinary department striving to create memorable dining experiences for members of all ages.’ We are as excited (as he looks on the second picture) to welcome on board and he has already made an impact on our clubs overall experience. It’s our assistant professional, Webb Wishon’s, one year anniversary here at Maple Chase!
We asked him some questions!
What’s been your proudest moment working here this past year?
Having the opportunity to coach our PGA Junior League team all the way to the Section Championship at Pinehurst. It was a true honor to represent Maple Chase and see the juniors’ hard work and growth pay off in such a big way.
What part of your job do you enjoy the most?
I really enjoy building relationships with our members and finding ways to serve their needs before they even have to ask. I also value the camaraderie among our team - I feel fortunate to work with such a great group of people who make every day enjoyable.
Which part of the job have you grown in the most?
I’ve grown the most through working closely with Paul on tournament operations and learning the details of set-up and execution. I’ve also taken more initiative in the merchandising side, developing a stronger sense of product selection and presentation.
What are your goals for the next year? New skill/responsibility you want to take on?
My goals are to pass Level 2 of the PGA Professional Golf Management program, continue elevating our junior golf program, and exceed what we accomplished this year. I’d also like to explore new merchandising brands, learn advanced display strategies, and continue improving my own game.
What advice would you give to someone just starting in this role?
Be proactive - anticipate needs before they arise and always pay attention to detail. If you’re unsure about something, ask questions. Take notes and write things down so you can retain and build on what you learn every day.
What is your favorite piece of gear in the shop?
I really liked the Bald Head Blues drop!
What’s the funniest memory you have while being here this past year?
Should I say myself falling or Randy falling? 😂 Either way, the security footage doesn’t lie!

Summer intern Bradley Davis’ last day with us is Sunday Aug 10th. Glad you spent it with us! We asked him some questions: What brought you to intern at Maple Chase this summer?
I’ve worked with Brad, and he always speaks so highly of Maple Chase - the course, people, and family-like atmosphere. It sounded like a place where work wouldn’t feel like a chore and that’s what I experienced. I was excited about the opportunity to build new relationships with the members and learn golf shop function. I’m also grateful to Justin for playing a pivotal role in giving me this opportunity.
What was your favorite part about interning at Maple Chase?
The daily interaction with the members and getting to play with new people. The energy out here is great. One moment I’ll never forget is watching Tom Heyden sink that unforgettable putt during the member-member shootout. It was electric! Another fun memory for me was one of the Thursday night shootouts when I joined a few members for 9 that unexpectedly turned into a wild mix of a shootout… we even had to be ushered off the course. It was pretty nuts.
What was one of the most important things you learned while being here?
I learned how to use golf software efficiently, but beyond that, I gained a deeper understanding of how important it is to make members feel welcome and valued. I also improved my time management and learned how to prioritize tasks during busy days. I really developed my communication skills, putting names to faces and building those personal connections went a long way.
What are your hopes for this next year at Gardner-Webb?
As I head into my senior year, I’m looking forward to graduation and hopefully winning a conference championship. I’m planning to apply everything I’ve learned this summer, especially when it comes to time management and relationship building, to help me succeed in the classroom and beyond.
What do you hope to do after college?
I’m considering a fifth year and would love the chance to come back to Maple Chase next summer if the opportunity is there. Long term, I want to keep playing golf and find a role in the golf industry that aligns with my passions and strengths.
