Sweet, sweet Rosie crossed over the rainbow bridge last week at 16. She was an extreme snuggler, a cozy chair seeker, an enthusiastic UPS greeter, and perhaps the friendliest pup ever. We miss her horribly but she will live in our hearts forever. 💔 by @maplecornerbarb

Greece on Bikes - Day 2
The impending severe storm resulted in some brief showers on our first night of camping but got us quickly packed up and on our bikes the next morning… hoping to avoid the severe rain and thunder storms predicted. We skipped coffee and breakfast and hurried toward the ferry crossing back to the mainland. We had a beautiful tailwind and our only mishap was a “pack” of elderly stray dogs who all jumped up when they saw a bikepacker heading toward us. We stopped, walked and I used my puppy voice and they all lied back down.

The ferry crossing was necessary because bikes aren’t allowed to cross the bridge. Given the wind and rain we were happy about that. We biked another 11km to Nefpaktos along a busy road, dodging Greek drivers who we are invisible to. There we got our cappuccino and breakfast and reassessed forging ahead through the emergency alert storm or finding a place for the night. The rain paused and we decided if we could find a hotel near our planned camping spot on Lake Trichonida that we’d continue on. On we went.

Awesome decision!! We experienced more incredibly friendly Greek people. First at a mountain village coffee spot where we met what felt like the entire family including the dog Melissa. They told us that they were a popular kayaking and rafting spot but for the last 3 years there has not been enough water in the river. As we left they asked for our names in case they needed to send the police looking for us in the crazy storm.

Our path took us on gravel stretches further into the mountains before heading down to the Lake. We followed a dirt path along the completely undeveloped lake front until we landed at our spot for the night. We were met by our host Paula who greeted our muddy selves with a “Bravo! Bravo!” She brought us organic wine from her neighbors vineyard and arranged for local souvlaki take out. Despite the weather - a great day! by @maplecornerbarb

Greece on Bikes-Adventures and mishaps from riding through Greece for a month.

Flying to Athens with bikes went incredibly smoothly and was also an adventure in itself. Nobody said we couldn’t bring our bikes on the train from the airport to central Athens. No one told us about the escalators or the crowds of people we’d encounter on the train either, or the woman who whispered to me - “this is probably illegal.” But after emerging from the subway and pushing the boxes a mile or so down cobble sidewalks we finally found our Airbnb for 2 nights where “Mama and Papa” greeted us warmly.

We spent a couple days walking around the city looking to buy hard to find items we’d forgotten to bring like camp gas, we looked at a lot of old buildings and statues, and ate some incredibly good food and discovered ouzo - I blame the waitress. We met so many helpful and kind Greek people, including a sweet jeweler at a street market who I had to buy earrings from. Oh and the street art is everywhere!

Today we finally got on our bikes after boarding a train - legally - with our bikes to Kiato on the north coast of the Peloponnese peninsula. We biked a lovely 60 flat miles through quiet seaside towns and were splashed by big waves from the Gulf of Corinth. We ended our day at Tsoris campground right on the water and had dinner with a fellow cyclist from Belgium who asked us many questions about what is happening to the US. Other than an emergency alert sounding across everyone’s phones warning of impending heavy rain and storms tomorrow, it was a perfect first day on bikes. by @maplecornerbarb

We said goodbye to our sweet Winnie this week and our hearts are aching. How is it possible we will never be able to look into those deep brown soulful eye again? She was such an amazing pup - lover of snow, hikes, snuggles and tricky trainers. We miss her dearly 💔 by @maplecornerbarb
