American Portraits 1979-1989 šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

This gorgeous Leon Borensztein book wa edited by Todd Hido can be yours if you make me an offer I can’t refuse!

Sumptuous black and white portraits, a time capsule of America in the 1980s that captures an innocence and purity of the times. I’d venture to say it is in the same vein as Dian Arbus and Richard Avedon. An under the radar gem screaming to belong on your bookshelf.

Yes, I made it through the 10-day silent meditation retreat.

Yes, it was a life changing experience…10 years of therapy in 10 days.

Yes, I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to make a change in their lives.

Feel free to get in touch with me if you want to discuss. Though I plan on not being on here much as breaking my phone habit was a delightful side effect.

Have you ever wished you had one of those tiny buttons you stick a straightened out paper clip end in so you could do a reboot? Like on the side of your phone or in the back of your modem? Maybe it could be behind your ear. Well unfortunately we don’t have such a button but I’m feeling stuck. Have felt this way pretty much since mum died already 3 years ago. Don’t know how to breathe anymore. And the stress of packing up my folks home, putting my own stuff into storage and becoming ā€œhome-free.ā€ Not to mention the bitch that menopause has proven to be, kickstarting arthritis in my hands, not sleeping in 3+ years and other fun new discoveries.

So here’s where the fun begins…I’m heading out momentarily for a 10-day Vinpassana silent meditation retreat. Take a look at this schedule: wake up is at 4 am, 10 hours of meditation each day, no devices not to mention books or journals, and no sensual pleasure (whatever that means). Yes I talk a lot, but not speaking isn’t what worries me, it’s the fact that we aren’t allowed to have any books or devices. I can’t remember the last time I went to sleep without listening to something, maybe 8 or 9 years. If I can overcome this, that will be an accomplishment.

Will this fix my life, cure all that ails me, enlighten me to know what to do with the time I have left? Probably not. But I’ll settle for being able to breathe deeply past my chest and to quieten my chatty little mind.

See you on the other side!

How it started…how it’s going. What is it with me and glasses?

Broke my glasses the last day of my drive to MedAlta two months ago…got them ā€œfixedā€ only to break em again on my last day driving back.

While at @medalta made this sculpture ā€œDick With Dirty Photoā€ based on my Haddon Hall photo by the same title. Didn’t have a chance to glaze him so packed the bisqued sculpture oh so carefully only to have Customs search my car upon my return and break him. Now we are twins.

And this on the heels of my sculpture ā€œPearl’s Legsā€ exploded in the kiln. But I made lemonade out of lemons and used it as a giant test tile to experiment with glazes.

I may have returned from my ceramics residency essentially empty handed, but like the tattoo on Ben Affleck’s back, Pearl shall rise again and I will fix my Dick. Left with so much knowledge, inspiration and eagerness to persevere with ceramics. Stay tuned!

Artist talk Tuesday December 30, 7:30 PM at ANU Museum, Tel Aviv.

Currently I’m in line at Toronto Pearson Airport to fly to Israel for potentially 2 months since my cousin is getting married NYE and I have no where else to be. So why not visit ANU Museum where I’m part of a terrific group show and give a talk about my career. Bound to be great since I’ll be absolutely jet lagged 🫠 If you’re in the area, come say hi!

According to @asaf.galay and @anumuseum : ā€œNaomi Harris, one of the most fascinating and daring photographers in the US today, is coming to a special event at ā€˜Anu - Museum of the Jewish People’ and invites you to join an inspiring meeting.
In a conversation with curator and filmmaker Assaf Galay, they will delve into the world of subcultures in Trump’s America and talk about appropriation, eroticism and the limits of contemporary photography.ā€
After that, we will go on a curatorial tour with Michal Houminer and Asaf Galay.
Tuesday, 30.12.25, 19:30
Anu - Museum of the Jewish People | Tel Aviv University campus
The event will be held inĀ English

Awwww, this is a photo of Maggs and Dads in Vegas when we did one of our Father-Daughter road trips. The deal was Jerry would have to let Maggie sit in his lap which, if you knew my father, was a HUGE deal since he was deathly afraid of dogs...until she came into his life. Then instead of crossing the street when he'd see someone approaching with a dog he would stop and ask what their name was. Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks?!

And who ever said that also would never in a million years expect my dad to quit smoking but one December 12th my dad did just that. He began smoking at age 15 to, ironically, cover up his bad breath. By the time he quit he was smoking 3 packs of unfiltered cigarettes, Player's Plain being his ciggie of choice but replaced by the cheaper Pall Mall. I can still remember being like 7 or 8 and sliding a tenner across the counter at Rainbow Variety and in my squeaky voice saying "2 packs Player's Plain non-filtered please" and the cashier without batting an eye handing me two packs of smokes, and with the change getting a couple of Big Feet. We'd beg him over the years to give up smoking, but ultimately is was the unrelenting prices going up and then Jerry saw the Barbara Kopple documentary "Harlan County, USA" that made him quit smoking. There's a scene in the movie where a doctor takes out a lung that belonged to a coal miner with Black Lung Disease that just crumbles in his hands and that was when it dawned on him that his lung was probably the same. And with that, after 35 years of smoking, he went on the patch and quit.

I can't remember what year this was, we lost track at around year 25 or 26, but I honestly believe, even with him ultimately getting lung cancer, his quitting smoking gave him an extra quarter of a century of life. I like to still celebrate this milestone and remember my dad fondly.

For those of you who smoke, today is a good day to say to yourself enough. by @mapledipped
