Maple hasn’t been ridden in almost two months. Between travel, injuries, and life getting in the way, there have been plenty of reasons for the break!

This also isn’t the first time I’ve brought her back into work myself after some time off. Nervous me would always ask my coach to ride her first, just to make sure everything was okay.

Looking back, I’m not sure why I worried so much, because this little mare looked after me the entire ride. 💕

Maple hates lunging. Like… absolutely despises it. 😅
Rearing, pulling on the rope, frustration from both of us — it just wasn’t working for either of us.

So I decided to try free lunging instead. Focusing on connection, calmness, and asking her to tune into my body language and cues rather than fighting the pressure of a rope.

This is only day two of free lunging after over a month off, and she already seems so much softer and happier. 🤍

We still have lots to work on, but I’m really loving these quiet, calm little moments together. #ottb #horsegirl #horses #horselife #horse by @maplewithme_

Join us for a little free lunge to celebrate getting the all clear from the vet 🥹✨

Unfortunately I’m about to head away, so Maple will properly come back into work when I return — but today we let her stretch her legs and shake off four weeks of pent-up energy… and wow, did the crazies come out 😅

Three. Whole. Hours. 🫠

This was a planned bath day… because she was absolutely FILTHY. Like, next-level, caked-in, living-her-best-mud-life filthy. Maple is out of work due to cellulitis and loving all this mud!

Step one: pre-soak the layers of dried mud (because of course it wasn’t just surface level 🙃) Step two: shampoo + serious scrubbing to rediscover the actual horse underneathStep three: condition to bring that coat back to life. Step four: oiling up the dry bits and giving her skin some love. Step five: cleaning, treating, and bandaging her wounds so everything heals nicely

Three hours later… clean, shiny, feeling very accomplished.

Put her back in the paddock…

Three minutes.

That’s how long it took for her to roll. Straight. Into. The. Mud. 😌

Honestly, I just stood there questioning everything.

A little unexpected bump in the road for Miss Maple this week 💔🐴

After enjoying a well-earned week off following her competition, Maple has been resting up while some small cuts on her back hock heal beautifully. Today I brought her in for a light lunge, only to notice she was suddenly very lame. At the walk it was subtle, but enough to know something wasn’t right.

The vet was called straight away, and thankfully we’ve caught a mild case of cellulitis early. She’s now all cleaned up, disinfected, bandaged, and started on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to get on top of the infection and keep her comfortable 🥲

She’s already much brighter and doing well, and with a week of rest and TLC we’re hoping she’ll be back to herself in no time 🤍

Horses love to keep us humble… one minute planning rides, the next playing nurse again. For now, Maple’s job is simply to eat, rest, and heal ✨ #ottb #horsegirl #horselife #horses #horse by @maplewithme_

What we’ve been up to this week… 🤍🐴

After our first competition, Maple has had a well deserved week off. And honestly… she’s been living her best life 😌

Lots of feed, plenty of hay, rest, and a bodywork session with our lovely Lou from @balance_equine_services ✨
Giving her time to reset, recover, and just be a horse again has been so important.

Next week we’ll ease back into work before I head off on a little Japan holiday 🇯🇵 (so excited!!)
Then it’s straight into prep mode for our next competition in June 👀
