🔐 CAPE TOWN unlocked
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
⛰️ The Cape Fold Mountains — South Africa from above 🇿🇦

Stretching across the Western Cape, the Cape Fold Mountains form a striking network of parallel ridges separating the Atlantic coastline from the drier interior.

Around Cape Town, the valleys and coastal plains between these mountains support cities, farmland and some of the region’s most distinctive ecosystems.

🛰️ Captured by a Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite on 5 June 2026, this natural-colour image shows the mountain ranges extending north and east from the Cape Peninsula. Deep blue marks the Atlantic Ocean, while shades of green reveal cultivated land and winter vegetation. Further inland, the landscape shifts to brown and ochre as rugged mountains give way to increasingly dry terrain.

From orbit, the geography that shapes the Western Cape becomes remarkably clear — mountains, valleys, farmland, cities and coastline all connected in one landscape.

Copernicus satellite data help monitor vegetation, agriculture, water resources and changing ecosystems across regions like this.

🐊 Would you get into the water with a Nile crocodile?

In the Cape Winelands, @lebonheuradventures offers one of the most unusual adventure experiences around Cape Town: crocodile cage diving.

The cage diving experience is seasonal, returning from late spring into the warmer summer months, when the crocodiles are more active and conditions are better for diving.

Until then, there is still plenty to experience. Visitors can join a guided crocodile pond tour, explore the snake exhibition, catch the weekend snake show, or spend some time outdoors with fishing, rowing and SUP. 🐍🎣🛶

And once cage diving season begins, the brave and curious can spend around 20 minutes inside the crocodiles’ aquatic habitat, observing these incredible animals both above and below the water.

For those looking for something even more adventurous, limited night cage dives are also offered during the warmer season. 🌙🐊

Worth visiting now, and definitely one to remember as summer approaches. taken in Simondium by @mappolo.passport

We went snorkelling for science with @caperadd and it was such a special way to experience False Bay.

After a short briefing with marine biologists, we headed into the kelp forest to explore, spot marine life, and help collect data on local fish and sharks. It was part adventure, part ocean classroom, and part citizen science.

Cape Town has so many experiences that go beyond sightseeing, and this was a beautiful reminder that exploring can also mean learning, protecting, and connecting more deeply with the place around us.

Recommend for anyone curious about the ocean, conservation, or seeing Cape Town from a completely different angle. taken in Windmill Beach by @mappolo.passport

The crowds you feel on the Waterfront in January aren’t a sign of mass tourism. They’re 12 months of demand squeezed into 10 weeks. Cape Town is a small-volume city with a big seasonal peak. taken in Cape Town, South Africa by @mappolo.passport

Is Simon’s Town a budget-friendly day trip from Cape Town?

Absolutely.

Cape Town has world-class stories hiding in plain sight, and some of them cost absolutely nothing to explore.

The South African Naval Museum in Simon’s Town is one of them. Yes, it’s free. And yes, it’s genuinely worth a visit.

Getting there can also be part of the experience. The train from the city takes you through some iconic parts of Cape Town, and from Muizenberg onwards, the route hugs the ocean with some seriously beautiful views all the way towards Simon’s Town.

Most people know Simon’s Town for its famous African penguin colony, but the town also has a rich naval history, beautiful old streets, and a few underrated cultural gems.

And for lunch? If you’re not in the mood for seafood, try @minari_ct Korean Kitchen. For a coffee specialties, check out the newly opened @choir.coffee .

A full day out, ocean views, history, culture, penguins, good food, and a free museum.

Not bad for a budget-friendly Cape Town escape. taken in Simon's Town by @mappolo.passport
