📚 Banned Books Week: Access, Conversation & Discernment

Some books are difficult because they confront violence, injustice, abuse, prejudice, or other painful realities.

And sometimes those books can make us uncomfortable.

But rather than removing every uncomfortable book from the shelf, I think there are better questions to ask:

📖 Who is the intended reader?
📖 Are they ready for the subject matter?
📖 Does the reader have the maturity or support needed to process it?
📖 And most importantly — what conversations can this book help us have?

For me, reading has never meant agreeing with everything on the page. Sometimes a book challenges us, unsettles us, or forces us to look at experiences very different from our own.

That is where access, conversation, and discernment all matter.

So for Banned Books Week, I went looking through my own shelves.
Books That Have Been Challenged: Which Have You Read?

Several are already sitting in my personal library — and a few I haven’t read yet may be finding their way onto my TBR. 📚😉

As always, I encourage readers to consider content, age appropriateness, and their own reading boundaries before picking up an unfamiliar title.

We’re adding a new little adventure to our Sunday Shelf Check called…

🌿📖 Reading in the Wild! 📖🌿

I thought it would be fun to see WHERE everyone is reading out in the wild.
On a train? 🚆
In the car? 🚗
On a plane? ✈️
At the park, the beach, a coffee shop…?

This is starting to sound like a Dr. Seuss adventure, doesn’t it? 😂

And all kinds of reading count — a paperback, hardcover, e-reader, or even listening to an audiobook while you’re out exploring.

Greetings Stack Seekers! 📚✨

We have another Special Edition Stack Quest from our adventures in Cork, Ireland! 🇮🇪

While exploring St. Patrick’s Street, we discovered Eason — and there were plenty of treasures to find!

This bookstore has so many areas to explore, from books and newspapers to special gifts, stationery, journals, notebooks… and even SNACKS! 😄📚✏️

The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly, too. If you find yourself shopping in Cork, Eason is definitely worth adding to your Stack Quest! 🗺️

A big thank-you to @eason_ireland for such a fun stop on our Cork adventure! 💚

Hello, Literary Friends! 📚🎃

For October’s Curator’s Corner, we’re exploring a little Gothic Literature — some old favorites, some classics, and maybe a few stories that aren’t quite what you expect when you finally read them.

Our first October pick is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

I had been so indoctrinated by Hollywood’s version of Frankenstein that I was genuinely surprised by how different — and how much better — the actual story was. There is so much more depth, tragedy, and humanity in Shelley’s novel than I expected.

It definitely made me realize how much pop culture had shaped my idea of the story before I ever opened the book.

Have you read Frankenstein? Were you surprised by how the story actually played out — or was it what you expected?

Hello, Literary Friends! 📚✨

What better way to start the week than with a little bookish mail? 📦

Today’s Monday in the Stacks is a little different — come unbox this fun package with me!

One of my favorite things about being part of the book community is discovering all the little extras that make reading even more enjoyable — books, bookmarks, stickers, reading accessories… you just never know what treasure might be tucked inside. 😊

I decided to keep this video simple and natural and let the sounds of opening the package be part of the experience. So turn up the volume a little and enjoy some bookish ASMR with me. 🎧📚

Hello, Chapter Chasers! 📚✈️

Does anyone else treat airport bookstores like a treasure hunt? 🗺️✨

One of my favorite things to do when traveling through an airport is seek out those little convenience shops that have BOOKS!

There’s something about browsing the shelves while waiting for your flight that feels like finding a hidden treasure trove.

Even though I always have my Kindle — and most likely a paperback tucked into my backpack — you never know what literary treasure you might stumble across along the way. 😉

Hello Literary Friends! 📚

This week’s Curator’s Corner highlights one of my favorites in American literature — O Pioneers! by Willa Cather.

This story is filled with beautiful, scenic storytelling while showcasing the struggles, determination, and courage of immigrants building new lives on the Western prairie.

What I loved most about this book is the courage of our heroine, Alexandra, as she navigates the challenges of building a life for herself while protecting and caring for her family.

Having grown up in the West, Cather’s writing immediately transported me back. She has an incredible ability to capture not only the landscape, but the sights, smells, changing seasons, and wide-open feeling of the prairie.

There were moments when I could almost smell the earth and feel that Western air again. That sense of place made this story especially memorable for me. ❤️

O Pioneers! is also the first novel in what is commonly known as Cather’s Great Plains Trilogy, followed by The Song of the Lark and My Ántonia.
