Beyond excited to share the book cover of my doctoral thesis, Mythological Migrations: Imagining Queer Muslim Utopias—Artistic and Curatorial Strategies of Collaboration, Collective Resistance, and Coalition-Building. The project examines queer identity, resistance, and community in Muslim migratory contexts through contemporary art. Against the backdrop of rising Islamophobia, racism, anti-immigrant sentiments, homophobia, and transphobia in the west over the past twenty-five years, the research draws on transnational feminist and queer intersectional scholarship to consider specific artistic and curatorial practices, offering critical reflections on queer, Muslim, racialized, and migratory discourses.

My defence is planned for December 4, 2025 in Helsinki and the book is published by @aaltouniversity @aaltoarts. Graphic design by the one and only @munibar who has been part of the project from the very start. It’s taken me 7 years to complete this project and I can’t wait to finally share it with the world in its entirety at the end of this month! :D taken in Aalto University by @maq39

Join us for ‘Companions in Passing’: an artist talk and curated film programme by Danai Anagnostou, organised as part of the Unruly Visions exhibition.

Grounded in Anagnostou’s doctoral research, which discusses how the methods and aspirations of 20th-century collaborative women’s cinema reveal continuities and intergenerational connections that inform both the study and practice of feminist filmmaking today, the talk reflects on the case of Rababa (1962). Lena Tsouchlou and Vanda Papanikolaou’s film, Rababa, was shot during a road trip across West Asia and is widely considered the first Greek documentary directed by women. Despite its historical significance, it has no known surviving copy. Anagnostou will discuss this lost film through the themes it carries—movement, recollections and remnants, loss, orality, dissonance, friendship, and co-creation. The talk will be followed by a screening of films that echo these themes:

Unruly Visions, curated by Abdullah Qureshi and organized as part of Simurgh: International Festival of Film and Arts 2026, borrows its title from a 2018 book by the eminent South Asian scholar Gayatri Gopinath. Expanding upon her articulation of queer diasporic aesthetic practices, the exhibition explores questions of gender and sexual difference to challenge interconnected colonial, patriarchal, and capitalist structures of violence and oppression from South West Asian, African, and Mediterranean regional, diasporic, and migratory positionalities.
