Stu Thoms

28-29-Sep-2012 – Spartathlon – 26:28:19 – #Adidas AdiZero Adios
Date of birth: 18-Oct-1966
Nationality: German

The Spartathlon is among the most difficult #ultramarathon races in the world. It also has an incredible history, being the other legendary run of Pheidippides before his fatal journey between Marathon and Athens.

Legend has it that he ran the 246km from Athens to Sparta in approximately 36 hours to secure aid for the war between Greece and Persia. His efforts were unsuccessful, but many years later in '82 several RAF servicemen completed the distance within his time. The next year the Spartathlon was born.

The race in '12 had an incredibly tight battle for the podium with Stu Thoms eventually beating out Tetsuo Kiso to win. Seperated by just over 8 minutes, it is still the closest finish in event history. Thoms wore the @Adidas AdiZero Adios racing flat, amazingly providing enough support for the race.

It was the latest in the AdiZero series that launched in '04, famed former #ASICS designer Hitoshi Mimura leading the way for their new generation of racing shoes. Kiso wore the @ASICS Tarther Japan, the series having launched in '83. It provided a more cushioned alternative to the ultralight Sortie.

Completing the outright podium was @Lizzy.Hawker who battled with Kiso for some time before falling back, albeit still setting the women's CR. Hawker provided more confirmation of studies that show the performance gap between men and women shrinks as distance increases.

Her shoes were the #Nike LunaRacer+ 2, which used Lunarlon: the latest evolution of Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) foam that was apparently 30% lighter than Phylon which was another updated take on EVA launched by @Nike back in the 80s. Lunarlon debuted in '08 but has since been superseded by newer technologies.

If you want to read more about some of the incredible ultramarathon performances women have achieved over the years, I'd strongly recommend Ultrawomen by @LilyCanter and @EmmaWJourno which helps explain the science behind these achievements as well.

Paula Radcliffe

13-Oct-2002 – #ChicagoMarathon – 2:17:18 – #Nike Air Streak Ekiden V
Date of birth: 17-Dec-1973
Nationality: English
World Record duration: 6 months

@Paula_Radcliffe almost broke the outright women's WR at her #marathon debut at the '02 @LondonMarathon, still setting the women-only WR in the process. All eyes were on her as she lined up for the fast and flat Chicago Marathon against the outright women's WR holder at the time, Catherine Ndereba.

By the halfway mark Radcliffe was #running 2 minutes ahead of her debut pace, Ndereba her only competitor as they approached the 15th mile. Radcliffe proceeded to accelerate away. At the 23rd mile her escort (running alongside and not in front like a traditional pacer) told Radcliffe her current speed, her response to again accelerate despite the headwind.

She crossed the line to win and set the new outright women's WR in the process. She would go on to run even faster during her legendary win at the '03 London Marathon, further cementing her as a legend of distance running.

She wore the @NikeRunning Air Streak Ekiden V, designed by @StevenSmith as the latest entry in the Air Streak Ekiden series started by @Nike in '95. The release version had a simpler upper, but the versions made for Radcliffe had flame graphics inspired by hot rod culture (read more in an article @RussBengston wrote for @Complex).

Technologically, it had Zoom Air cushioning in the heel, with minimal amounts of EVA foam to create a highly effective racing flat. The same midsole unit was used for the Air Streak Spectrum Plus, which adopted the flame designs Radcliffe made famous while using a different upper.

Ndereba in 2nd wore the previous version, the Air Streak Ekiden IV, which used the exact same technical formula as its successor. Completing the podium was Yōko Shibui who wore the #ASICS Sortie, introduced in '81 with the primary focus on lightness, many variations releasing over the following decades.

Allison Roe

25-Oct-1981 – New York City #Marathon – 2:25:28.8 – #ASICS Sortie
Date of birth: 30-May-1956
Nationality: New Zealander
World Record duration: 1 year, 5 months, 23 days*

The '81 #NYCMarathon was billed as a duel between 3x winner (and WR holder) Grete Waitz and newcomer Allison Roe. It was a miracle that Roe even started, her right ankle treated for tendinitis only days before the race!

15 miles into the race and it was Waitz who succumbed to injury while battling Roe, leaving her to power to the win and set the new women's WR. It was a huge day for the @NYCMarathon as Alberto Salazar set the new men's WR as well.

Roe wore the @ASICS Sortie, released in '81 as the sequel to the legendary Marup. It kept being updated until recently, with the '21 SortieMagic RP 6 the last shoe to carry the name. @IngridKristiansenCom was 2nd in the air-cushioned #Nike Mariah, Julie Shea in 3rd with the @Nike Terra T/C.

As for the WR, rumours started soon after that the course may have been short, organisers already making changes for '82 to lengthen it by 99 metres. This was to counter corner cutting in Central Park, which could shorten the course given runners would take the most efficient path and not run to the side the course was measured.

In December '84 the course was thoroughly re-measured by experts who had designed the route for the '84 Olympics, measuring it the way athletes would have been #running. Measurements were taken from 0.3 and 1 metre from the curb, the course found between 103 to 152.4 metres short.

Because of this, both WRs were invalidated. It should be noted that the same course was used since '78 with only minor changes, which puts into question the WR times set by Waitz when winning the event in '78, '79, and '80.

@WorldAthletics recognises the times as WRs, but the Association of Road Racing Statisticians are of the view those WRs should also be invalid given the course issues. You can read more in the article on my website.

Dennis Kimetto

28-Sep-2014 – Berlin #Marathon – 2:02:57 – #Adidas AdiZero Adios Boost 2
Date of birth: 22-Jan-1984
Nationality: Kenyan
World Record Duration: 3 years, 11 months, 19 days

The winning time of Dennis Kimetto at the '14 @BerlinMarathon is still the fastest ever set without the benefit of carbon-fibre plates. He did so while also achieving a negative split, taking the lead at only the 38th km before surging to win.

His shoes were the @Adidas #AdiZero Adios Boost 2, Emmanuel Mutai in 2nd wearing the same, its midsole made from Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) pellets expanded around air pockets, the tech dubbed Boost. Although the model took some design elements from the Adios 2 like its outsole, it was the TPU foam that made the big difference.

It was the benchmark against which #Nike tested their prototype VaporFly against to achieve the legendary claim of a 4% running efficiency improvement. @AdidasRunning tried their own approach with the Sub2, every element chosen to reduce weight with Adidas finding that every 100g removed gave an increase of 1% to running efficiency, the Sub2 coming in at 156g compared with the Adios Boost 2 weighing 227g. Despite these changes, no runner wearing it was able to beat the benchmark time set by Kimetto.

Abera Kuma was 3rd, his shoes the @Nike Zoom Streak 3 which as the name suggests used Zoom Air cushioning, with a unit under the heel. It was an extremely popular model, while released in '09 it was still used for elite #running as late as '15. More interesting is that @NikeRunning tried their own version of Boost back in '93!

Using Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate (EVA), the Niobe was pitched as an ultralight racing flat which used EVA pellets surrounding pockets of air. Images from the '93 catalogue shows that the intention was to use this new technology for the entire midsole. Likely due to durability issues, the final release limited this to a top layer of the specialised EVA pellets.

#HalfMarathon World Record since 1979 - men

Until '79 the half-marathon WR was set during full #marathon races. @Jacob_Kiplimo is now fastest ever over the half-marathon + the WR holder. This is because his best time was not ratified by @WorldAthletics as it deemed that he was paced by the timing car. @OfficialHaileGebrselassie is thought by the Association of Road Running Statisticians to have slipstreamed the timing car for his WR, but his time was still ratified.

Kiplimo wore a protoype @Nike Alphafly 4 for his WR. It is the latest carbon-fibre plate racer from @NikeRunning, with an extended plate going past the forefoot, the brand having a long history of interesting prototypes including a Mariah with its midsole replaced with a huge airbag!

As it was, Paul Cummings in his @NewBalance COMP 400 broke the Nike streak and set the scene for other brands. After @SteveJones20713 in the @Reebok Paris set the WR, Mark Curp in the New Balance COMP 400 ended the 80s with the WR.

Arturo Barrios was 1st under an hour at the '91 La Flèche 1-hour race, just passing the half-marathon distance. A race photo shows he wore the Reebok World Distance track spikes! Moses Tanui took the WR even lower in prototype @Superga HPS Racers which used wave-shaped plates mimicking the shape of the foot.

It was designed by Filippo Pavesi, who then helped create the '97 @Fila Silva Racer: the 1st racing flat to have a full-length carbon-fibre plate. Paul Tergat used to it to set a new WR, #running just over 59 minutes!

Then Samuel Wanjiru in the @Mizuno Wave Spacer took the WR. Mizuno tried many forms of cushioning, even a carbon-fibre shank in the '95 Super Athlete 103. They moved to Wave plate tech in '97 and by '99 raced with it. Racing flats from #Nike and #Adidas kept battling for the WR until the supershoe era.

100 Mile World Record since 1975 - men

Any #running event longer than the marathon distance is an #ultramarathon. Such races grew in popularity during the pedestrianism era of the 19th century, 100 miles among the most popular race lengths.

@ultrarunner_aleksandr_sorokin has held the WR for the distance since '21, having broken the 11-hour mark in '22. His training for the later race was simply better than in '21, so even with the 1st half going by too quickly for him, he still set the new WR. In '22 he wore the #Nike Alphafly with its carbon-fibre plate and Zoom Air cushion. He had started his '21 race in the @Hoka Carbon X but switched to the Alphafly after 68 miles citing discomfort.

Going back, it was Cavin Woodward in '75 who took nearly 20 minutes off the WR, his tactic to go out fast. Despite struggling towards the end, he set multiple other WRs as well! He wore the @OnitsukaTigerOfficial Cub, a version of the Marup/Marathon model that debuted in '57 and kept being updated until at least '85.

Ultramarathon legend Don Ritchie set the new WR in '77. Going out fast as well, Ritchie also began to feel the strain, but when told at 80 miles he was on WR pace he pushed to almost break the 11:30 barrier. His shoes were likely the @KarhuOfficial 2323 marathon training shoe. He did not wear the Champion model that debuted in '75 with air cushion, years before @Nike.

Ritchie's WR stood until '02 when Oleg Kharitonov finally bettered the time. He battled Denis Jalybin, taking the lead 135 metres from the finish. He likely wore the @Asics Gel-Magic Racer with the semi-fluid silicon Gel tech used in many @ASICSRunning shoes.

The last WR holder before Sorokin was @ZachBitter in the minimalist zero-drop @AltraRunning Solstice. Having tried to set the WR for years, Bitter enjoyed perfect conditions and even managed a negative split!

Derek Clayton

30-May-1969 – @AntwerpMarathon – 2:08:33.6 – #Adidas #Marathon
Date of birth: 17-Nov-1942
Nationality: Australian
World Record duration: 12 years, 6 months, 6 days*

Back in '69 @Adidas had its 1st marathon WR thanks to Derek Clayton, who literally vomited black mucous and urinated blood in the hours after his Antwerp Marathon win. His shoes were the @AdidasRunning Marathon, designed for distance #running and evolving until '75.

Adidas made versions of the Marathon for Clayton, like the pair he wore at the '68 @Olympics and for the race in Antwerp with an upper in the same colours as the Mexicana. These are extremely rare, to recreate it I used ChatGPT to digitally recolour another image.

Jim Alder in 3rd likely wore the Marathon too, but Akio Usami in 2nd used the @OnitsukaTigerOffiical Marup, its nylon upper having been introduced back in '67 with the model debuting in '57. The Marup was hugely successful and sold as late as '84!

As for the WR, suspicions soon arose about the course accuracy. Unlike the usual method of using calibrated wheels on bicycles, Belgian Track Federation officials admitted later that they averaged the odometers of several cars to measure the course.

This risks serious inaccuracy, made worse by the method likely using the older standard of measuring 1m from the curb in the direction cars drove and competitors ran. This is very different to the most efficient route that courses have been measured in since the 80s to reflect how athletes race. By modern standards the '69 Antwerp Marathon was approximately 430m short. By the older standards, which were already under scrutiny as early as '61, the course was about 300m long.

None of this discredits the incredible effort of Clayton, but it is telling that in '24 @WorldAthletics updated their guide to the progression of world athletics records to reflect the corrected marathon WR progression.

#Marathon World Record since 1973 - women-only

With the shock of the 1st sub 2-hour marathon, it should also be noted that @Tigist__Assefa set the WR for women-only marathons i.e. without the benefit of male pacers. She ran tactically, waiting for the last moment to take the win.

Her shoes were the #Adidas AdiZero Adios Pro Evo 3, an improvement over the Evo 1 she wore to set the women-only and women's outright marathon WRs. The 1st women-only marathon was held in '73 and won by Christa Vahlensieck, likely in the @Adidas SL 72.

That race was organised by Dr Ernst van Aaken who had long promoted the cause of women's running. Vahlensieck later wore EB Lydiard and then Patrick. Times kept dropping and the tech kept improving. Enter the #Nike Mariah, full-length air cushion boosting running efficiency by 2%.

Traditional flats were still fast, such as the @Puma Super Sonic that Joyce Smith used to almost break the 2:30 barrier. The tech war continued with the @NikeRunning Terra T/C and Phylon, lighter and more responsive EVA. @AdidasRunning had the Atlanta with Dellinger Web tech to help absorb impacts.

Joan Benoit took the WR with her win at the '84 @Olympics in the @Nike Skylon Racer, the elite version of the American Eagle. In '88 Lisa Ondieki set a WR with the Mariah, unbroken until Naoko Takahashi in '98. Her shoes were the ultralight @ASICS Sortie which kept being updated since its '81 release.

@Paula_Radcliffe broke the WR on her debut in '02 in the Nike Air Streak Ekiden V, and again in '05 in the Air Zoom Marathoner designed for her needs, both models had rear Zoom Air. Her WR stood until '17 when Mary Keitany set the new WR. Her Adidas Takumi Sen Boost 3 had TPU foam expanded around air.

Supershoes took over from '24, @peresjepchirchirngeno and then Assefa lowering the record 3 years straight at the @LondonMarathon.

#Marathon World Record since 1963 - men

@SabastianSawe recently broke the mythical 2-hour barrier for the marathon, setting the new WR in the #Adidas AdiZero Adios Pro Evo 3, using an innovative take on the carbon-fibre plate which goes around the outside of the shoe and not underfoot.

How did we get here? Abebe Bikila set the marathon WR barefoot at the '60 @Olympics, his 2:15:16.2 the fastest ever such time. The next WR was set in the @OnitsukaTigerOfficial Super Marup, which from launch in '57 until '84 only updated the upper but kept the same rubber cushion.

Brands like @NormanWalshUK and @Puma (track spike uppers with thin cushioning) would have their moment, but @Reebok with the ultralight World 10 and 2:05 racing flats held the WR for most of the 70s. Ron Hill during his WR run in '70 also set the half-marathon WR of 1:02:35! Shigeru Sō took back the WR in '78 in the now @ASICS Marup RS.

@Adidas struck in the 80s with multiple WRs, such as the LA Competition with Vario shock-absorbtion system using plastic pins to set cushioning. After Reebok and #Nike took WRs, Belayneh Densamo in '88 set a mark that stood until '98 in the @AdidasRunning Roader-SR, a Japanese market racing flat.

@Nike and its Air Streak series, with Ronaldo da Costa, took 45s off the WR before Khalid Khannouchi in the @NewBalance RC110 took it in '99. Adidas then gave us its AdiZero series in '04, which @OfficialHaileGebrselassie used to set WRs in '07 and '08, the formula still low stack height and lower weight.

This all changed in '18 when @KipchogeEliud and the Vaporfly took the WR under 2:02, Nike proving what carbon-fibre plates + responsive foam could do. Zoom Air pods in the Alphafly took things further, the WR set by the late Kelvin Kiptum making full use of the tech.

100 Mile World Record since 1971 - women

An #ultramarathon is any #running event longer than the marathon distance. From the pedestrianism era of the 19th century, extreme distance races grew in popularity with 100 miles a popular event. Earlier this year Ashley Paulson (@ashkickn) took the WR even closer to 12 hours, shaving 17 minutes off the WR set by @JenningsCaitriona in late '25.

Both Paulson and Jennings wore the #Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next% 3 with carbon-fibre plates and air cushion. Back in '71 when Natalie Cullimore took nearly 5 hours off the WR, on a course which unfortunately was uncertified like many such events at the time, she wore the @Adidas Olympia training shoe.

Rising star Marcy Schwam set the WR on a certified course in '80 in the @Nike Elite racing flat with EVA foam + many SMU colourways. Times tumbled during the 80s, with the WR broken by Sandra Kiddy in the Nike Terra T/C (with an advanced EVA called Phylon) and then Donna Hudson in the @Saucony Lady Magic.

Christine Barrett almost broke 15 hours in '84, her shoes the popular and affordable Hi-Tec Silver Shadow. That WR lasted until '88 when Hilary Walker went under 15 hours over the 100 Mile distance, her shoes an earlier version of the @NikeRunning Pegasus, complete with air cushion.

Legend Ann Trason would use this same tech in the Nike Air Max Light and the obscure Air Apparent to set the WR twice in '89 and again in '91, taking the WR under 14 hours. Her WR stood until '16 when Gina Slaby just beat it in the @Brooks Hyperion racing flat.

I strongly recommend Ultrawomen by @LilyCanter and @EmmaWJourno to better understand the science behind such incredible performances, along with some fascinating stories.

Thanks also to @RunYoung50 and ultrarunninghistory.com for their research without which this post would have been impossible.

Margaret Okayo

15-Apr-2002 – #BostonMarathon – 2:20:43 – #Fila Racer
Date of birth: 30-May-1976
Nationality: Kenyan
Course Record duration: 12 years, 6 days

With the announcement of the elite field for the '26 @BostonMarathon, let's look back to the legendary CR set by Margaret Okayo in '02. She was under huge pressure, her competition including then-current #marathon WR holder Catherine Ndereba.

They stayed together for 24 miles, Okayo surging ahead while Ndereba failed to respond, later saying her hamstring played up. Okayo not only won but set a new CR that would stand unbroken for more than a decade. At the time of writing it is still the 7th fastest time ever on the Boston course.

Her shoes were equally significant, the Fila Racer part of the series of racing flats the company made with carbon-fibre plates between '97-'04, the 1st of their kind. The series began with the '97 Silva Racer which had a full-length Carbon-Kevlar plate, but the sequel '99 Racer model only had a split plate due to management issues at the time (read more about that in my article @Marathon.Handbook).

As expected, it was technically inferior to the Silva Racer which in testing improved running efficiency by an average of 2.4%! The Racer nonetheless spawned the 1st ever trail supershoe, the '00 Skyracer. Although Fila updated the upper for the '01 Racer Plus, it was not until the '02 Racer K1 that they returned to full-length plates.

Ndereba used the #Nike Air Streak Ekiden IV, lightweight with air cushioning in the heel, she wore it for much of her career. It was the latest in a highly successful series @NikeRunning started in '95. Elfenesh Alemu wore the #Mizuno Wave Ekiden.

Important in its own right, @Mizuno_Running_jp launched Wave tech in '97, the culmination of more than 10 years of innovation. It was in the heel, providing cushioning and rebound for less weight than traditional foam. It quickly made its way into racing applications.

Belayneh Densamo

17-Apr-1988 – Rotterdam #Marathon – 2:06:50 – #Adidas Roader-SR
Date of birth: 28-Jun-1965
Nationality: Ethiopian
World Record Duration: 10 years, 5 months, 3 days

The @MarathonRotterdam is among the flattest and fastest races in the world, and has hosted many WRs including the time set by Belayneh Densamo at the '88 race. He came into the event as defending champion, promising to break the 2:07 barrier.

Organisers had instead promised rising star Hussein Ahmed Salah $50k if he set the WR, setting up what became an extraordinary duel between them. They stuck together until the final 2km, the pace car showing they were on WR pace. Densamo later said that at that moment he did not care if he died in his final push to break the WR.

After crossing the line to win, he erupted with joy and became the 1st to run the marathon in under 2:07. It would stand as the WR until '98, with the time Salah set on the way to runner-up still 2nd fastest of all-time until '95.

Densamo wore the highly obscure @AdidasRunning Roader-SR that was released in '87 as a Japanese update to the 210g De Castella Rotterdam, using the same outsole and midsole unit. It used dual-density EVA foam to provide greater stability.

@AdidasJapan released many model exclusively for the Japanese market, the MR series launching in '85 with the MR2100, MR2500, and MR2111. They were all lightweight, particularly the MR2100 and MR2500 with Densamo competing in the former in his early marathons.

Salah wore the 170g @LeCoqSportif Race, which used Vulkollan Polyurethane inserts to give extra cushioning and rebound. Unlike the @Adidas Roader-SR, the Race was brought back some years ago in several colourways.

Wodajo Bulti took the last spot on the podium. Based on photos of him competing at the '88 New York City Marathon, it is likely he wore the Adidas Marathon 88 (which Densamo used for the '90 season).
