How do you know if your mask is good?

A DaVinci Resolve tip.

A simple test:
Can the audience tell that you masked it?
The best masks are invisible.

If the mask is more noticeable than your subject, it’s probably too much.

Feather it. Track it properly.
Keep the adjustments subtle.

Your goal isn’t to show your masking skills.
It’s to guide the audience’s eyes.

How to use power windows in DaVinci Resolve?

There are 5 types of windows in DR:
1. Linear
2. Circle
3. Polygon
4. Curve
5. Gradient

The key is to keep exploring the differences of these 5 so that you’ll know when to use each of them in different scenarios.

For complex shapes, using a curve window is best. For sky, using the gradient window is a great way to do adjustments.

Doing trial and error on each power window is the thing that’ll develop your taste and experience in using it. Like going in the gym, for every rep, you become better. by @marben.p

How to get better at using power windows in DaVinci Resolve?

The north star that you should always ask yourself is: “What should the audience look at?”

Secondary questions are: “What am I trying to focus on?” “What parts of the image are distracting the viewer from my subject?”

Once you ask those questions, you can use the power windows to shape the light in uour color grade.

Another one of my favorite projects as a #Colorist from 2023 that I’d like to share with everyone

One tip when adding glow to your clips is that you should not overdo it.

Recently lots of people are using glow because it really is a cool effect but remember to just use the amount needed that you think is best and ask yourself if it’s too much
