Three-night tribute of music, dance, film, and poetry arrives as Filipino American History Month and Indigenous Peoples day. Directed & Choreographed by “Manai” Alleluia Panis with Music Direction by John Calloway. Featuring live performances by Alleluia Panis Dance Theatre and the Kulintang Jazz Art Ensemble.

The production transforms the stage into an immersive sacred space where Alleluia Panis Dance Theatre, John Calloway and the Kulintang Jazz Art Ensemble, and select legacy artists perform new works alongside restaged excerpts from the 1990s productions “Cycles: Timeless Rituals to Ancient Icons” and “Diwata,” exploring the intersection of indigenous ritual and contemporary performance to pay homage to our legacy artists.

*Tubong [too-bung], also known as “Putong,” means “to crown.” It is a communal ritual performed to honor village elders, traditionally practiced by the Tagalog people. taken in Dance Mission Theater by @marc.chappelle

Inspired by the true story of Pilipina nurses Leonora Perez and Filipina Narciso, who were wrongfully convicted and incarcerated for the 1975 deaths of patients at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, until a judge ordered their release due to the prosecutor’s “overwhelming prejudice.”

Burden of Proof by “Manai” Alleluia Panis ( @alleluiasfprojects ) is an immersive multimedia dance performance, that delves into the generational trauma inflicted by the American justice system and how traumatic experiences blur the line between memory and nightmare, told through the lens of the fictional Calinao immigrant family. Original sound score features text drawn from the diary of Leonora Magabo Perez and the writings of her son, Jason Magabo Perez ( @jsnmgbprz ), 2024 San Diego Poet Laureate.

“Exequel” is a new solo piece that functions as a ritual offering in honor of the memory and spirit of Exequel Cunanan, great-grandfather of the soloist and choreographer Marc Cunanan Chappelle.

Marc is an Oakland-based performer, choreographer, and company artist with PUSH Dance Company, Duniya Dance & Drum Company, and Embodiment Project from the Sacramento, CA area. He cultivates versatility across contemporary, Filipino, hip-hop, South Asian and West African idioms and is grateful to present work at the SAFEhouse Arts Resident Artist Workshop for the first time on October 18, 2025. He has performed in Amy Lewis/Push Up Something Hidden’s ‘My Obsession with Hamletmachine,’ KULARTS/Alleluia Panis’ “Lakbai Diwa” (2025) SFBATCO’s ‘I, Too, Sing America’ (2024) and ‘Sign My Name To Freedom, (2024), amara tabor-smith’s “Glory” (2024), and choreographed for Ronnie Reddick’s “Show Up to Show Out” (2023). He holds a B.A.H. from Stanford University.
