You made an agreement at 27 and you're still running the marriage on it at 47. Neither of you is that person anymore, and neither of you has said so out loud.

I didn't know your dreams had shifted. You didn't know mine had either. Twenty-some years of marriage and neither of us had noticed the drift in the thing we were supposed to be building toward.

Then we said them out loud, turned them into a vision, and now we're on the same page with a hope and an expectation. I don't know if we ever had one before. We do now.

Successful couples don't need marriage work. It sounds reasonable, and it's the most expensive belief in the room.

Because the more the business works, the easier the marriage is to defer. Nothing's wrong, so the vision conversation gets pushed one more quarter — and a decade of "we're fine" is how two people end up aligned in calendar and strangers in vision. Success is the perfect cover for drift.

We didn't research it. We closed our eyes, put a finger on a map, and it landed on San Jose, Costa Rica — so we booked it.

Five weeks of exploring later, sitting there at eight at night talking about a future we couldn't see yet, one of us asked the other what came next. The answer was: bring our kids back here. That was twenty-four years ago, and it took until 2024 — an old friend, a chance conversation, an invitation we said yes to instantly — for the seed God planted on that trip to finally come up.

Two houses, same storm, and from the street they look identical — you only find out which one was on rock when the weather comes. Plans are meant to change. Foundations aren't.

You can't tell from the photos which of these couples arrived certain and which one arrived quietly wondering if it was too late.

Ten years in, we looked back at what we'd built — the kids, the home, the family — and every bit of it was good.
