Next month marks my 12th year here in Dubai.

If you’re new here, hi. I’m Mark, a Filipino photographer and videographer based in Dubai.

I started out as a call center agent in Batangas, where I worked for four years.

In 2014, I moved to Dubai and continued working in a call center for another two years. Starting over wasn’t easy. I lived in bedspaces and partitioned rooms while trying to find my footing in a new country.

At the time, I knew nothing about the creative industry.

Things started to change in 2016 when a colleague introduced me to a photography community on Instagram. I joined their photowalks around the UAE and took photos using my LG phone.

Later that year, someone found my work on Instagram and gave me an opportunity to work as a food photographer. I had very little experience, but I took the chance and believed I could eventually do it full-time.

To learn and build my portfolio, I messaged people online and offered free photoshoots. Those shoots gave me the experience I needed and introduced me to more people in the industry.

Today, I work as a photographer and videographer in Dubai, creating content across fashion, product and food. Along the way, I also had the opportunity to travel to London for a campaign shoot.

I’ve put away my half-packed suitcase after 2 weeks on the floor next to my bed in my small studio apartment and returned my clothes back to the cupboard. I don’t know if I should be concerned that my brain now ignores the sound of 🚀 as I distract myself with work. Unlike the first few weeks, I was deciding whether to leave everything behind or see how it goes.
