Upholstery foam, men’s underwear, staples.
50 x 42 x 5 cm

On show at @gathering.london

A tightly folded arrangement of 2 black boxers and 2 black jockstraps, stretched over upholstery foam and secured with staples, transforms intimate garments into a minimalist geometric form.
Mirrored horizontally, the underwear becomes abstract, yet the padded surface swells into soft folds and bulges that recall flesh.
The work hovers between the body and its absence, reflecting on how intimacy is compressed, ordered and displayed.

Interview | Marc-Aurèle Debut : On Dating Apps, Intimacy & ON REPEAT

@marcaureledebut

Marc-Aurele Debut’s exhibition ON REPEAT closes this Saturday, but the questions it asks about dating, desire and emotional vulnerability feel more relevant than ever.

We spoke to the artist about intimacy, loneliness, repetition and why something as ordinary as a pair of underwear can become an archive of memory.

‘Most of my work starts from a personal experience, not because I’m interested in autobiography, but because it’s often the best place to begin asking broader questions. I’m interested in how contemporary systems-whether technological, economic or architectural-organise the way we experience our bodies, our desires and our relationships!

Emo(r)ji, 2026
30 x 146 cm
Powder-coated aluminum

Final week to see my solo ON REPEAT at @glasshouse.projects @gathering.london

Borrowing the six default emoji skin tones, themselves adapted from the Fitzpatrick skin type scale, Emo(r)ji transforms a familiar digital icon into a continuous chain of interlocking bodies. With its title combining emoji and orgy, the work examines how digital platforms, shaped by capitalist systems of extraction and consumption, standardise, categorise and circulate desire.

Within the economies of dating apps and social media, bodies become interfaces to browse, compare and consume. Identity is compressed into recognisable signs, while intimacy is reorganised through endless repetition and choice. By translating these digital symbols into aluminium, Emo(r)ji gives physical form to the industrialisation of desire, exposing how contemporary platforms transform bodies into standardised, circulating commodities within an economy of endless selection.

Some extracts from a text I wrote for the beautiful @marcaureledebut with some images of his work from his exhibition ‘On Repeat’ @glasshouse.projects @gathering.london 25 June - 1 August 2026.

Both of us have been reflecting on the pleasures and difficulties of queer relations. I’ve thought about how I and many others have enacted a kind of consumer relation to other people, where we browse, compare, acquire and replace. And in this ‘supermarket’, every choice is haunted by its potential replacement. This endless potential disposability I think has led to some pretty crappy behavior, where we can forget about the basic ethic of responsibility and commitment to the other’s humanity and their hurting but also loving life. In this text, I’ve been thinking about what other forms of relation we can try to forge. Have a read, it came from my heart and my longing and not from a bot, and have a look at Marc-Aurele’s exhibition before it closes. My full text is here https://www.glasshouseprojects.uk/marc-aurle-debut-on-repeat 📷 Ollie Hammick and Natalia Janula. Can’t believe we live in a world now where we have to say this. ‼️ by @marcaureledebut

Auto Repeat, 2026
Sound, 4min25s (seamless loop)

Auto Repeat is my first sound work.

Created for my solo show ON REPEAT at @glasshouse.projects @gathering.london the piece is built from recordings of machinery that I collected and transformed into a continuous composition.
Drawing on the repetitive structures of techno, it unfolds as a seamless loop with no clear beginning or end. Mechanical pulses, industrial textures and fragmented voices mirror the rhythms that organise contemporary life, desire and intimacy through repetition, circulation and accumulation.

Rather than functioning as a soundtrack, the work acts as the engine of the exhibition, giving the installations a shared temporal rhythm while immersing the space in an atmosphere of endless return.

Auto Repeat is now available to listen to on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music, and can also be downloaded for free on SoundCloud. Links are in my bio. by @marcaureledebut

In Circulation, 2026
Collected men’s underwear, steel drying racks.
270 x 180 x 250 cm

Currently on show in my solo 𝘖𝘕 𝘙𝘌𝘗𝘌𝘈𝘛 at @glasshouse.projects @gathering.london

In Circulation transforms hundreds of pairs of collected men’s underwear into a continuous loop circulating across a network of domestic drying racks. Collected over time from hookups, lovers, friends, anonymous gay men and myself, each garment once belonged to a singular body and carries traces of intimacy.

Many donors described hesitating before letting them go. Particular pairs evoked relationships, hookups, pleasure, tenderness, heartbreak and loss. Worn beyond their practical life, these garments had become quiet archives of personal histories.

The underwear is joined together with the plastic tag pins normally used to attach labels to new clothing, quietly linking these intimate objects to systems of retail, consumption and circulation.

The installation is also permeated by the mingled scent of hundreds of different detergents. Rather than a single fragrance, it is an accumulation of homes, routines, bodies and memories that extends the work beyond the visual, bringing countless individual experiences into a shared environment.

Join artist Marc-Aurèle Debut and curator and writer Yates Norton for a conversation inspired by Debut’s solo exhibition ON REPEAT and Norton’s specially commissioned text for the exhibition.

Together, they will reflect on love, desire, intimacy and queer life, asking how we might practice responsibility and commitment in cultures increasingly organised around individualism, self-optimisation and the endless circulation of bodies, images and possibilities. Drawing on Debut’s installation and Norton’s essay, the conversation will consider sex, dating apps, club culture and what it means to practice queerness today.

GLASSHOUSE is pleased to announce 𝘖𝘕 𝘙𝘌𝘗𝘌𝘈𝘛, a solo exhibition by Marc-Aurèle Debut on view 25 Jun–1 Aug 2026 at 5 Warwick Street, London.

It has become easier to expose the body than to expose the self.

We compare before we attach, anticipate failure before commitment, and move from one possibility to the next, believing abundance will protect us from disappointment. Instead, we remain in circulation.

𝘖𝘕 𝘙𝘌𝘗𝘌𝘈𝘛 explores how desire begins to follow the logic of consumption rather than seduction, constructing a world of repetition, accumulation and endless return through sculpture, installation and sound.

Accompanying exhibition text by Yates Norton.

Thrilled and grateful to show a new body of work including new works Aliveness (2026) and Allowing (2026). These works explore emotional traces within domestic materials - beds, upholstery, springs - holding memory, intimacy, and care. Through tension, movement, and openness, they frame relationships and love as mutable systems shaped by touch, change, and time.

Allowing, 2026
Linen, upholstery foam, staples, polyester fibre, chrome studs, artist wood frame.
135 x 190 x 5 cm

On show in ‘Love Is a Losing Game’
at @psmgallery curated by @philippagne

Allowing takes the scale of a double mattress as a site of intimacy, memory, and emotional learning. A wooden frame is upholstered with foam and linen, stretched and secured with staples that trace the Aries and Scorpio constellations, representing two men in a relationship bound by desire and emotional tension.

The constellations are connected by a single fold in the linen, a line of contact that ends not in staples but in two chrome studs, marking a point of connection without fixation. One corner of the linen remains unstretched and draped, recalling an unmade bed and the moment after intimacy.

The work reflects on first love, emotional exposure, and separation - not as damage, but as a process of learning how to feel, care, and remain open. taken in Berlin, Germany by @marcaureledebut
