This pageant… this semester… honestly transformed me in ways I’m still unpacking. From battling depression, losing my brother, facing conflicts, and having to sit with myself in deep reflection — I went through a lot. And without my village, I wouldn’t have shown up the way I did. I wouldn’t have had the strength to step on that stage and advocate, represent, and honor not just myself but Zeta Gamma the way I envisioned.

Being part of the 2025–2026 Mr. Debonair Pageant was and still is an honor. It shaped me into the man I’m becoming. It taught me the value of preparation, of brotherhood, and reminded me that excuses are tools for the incompetent. There is real power in representing something greater than yourself — especially when it’s your people and your community you’re representing.

And the wildest part? As I was doing my pageant research, I realized that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. had been connected to my life from the very beginning. My absolute favorite person in history is Katherine Johnson, and the first person I did a project on in grade school — a brilliant, determined Black woman who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor a U.S. citizen can receive. She carried this country’s space program on her back with her mind alone. My favorite movie, Hidden Figures, brought her story to life — played beautifully by Taraji P. Henson — and that film has always inspired me. I grew up admiring her greatness without even knowing she was an AKA… until preparing for this pageant. That connection hit deep.

So on this Charter Day, I want to give my full gratitude to this amazing chapter and this organization — one that continues to change the world, one day at a time. Thank you, Zeta Gamma, for allowing me to stand on your stage, in your light, and in your legacy.

So grateful that I could have this event. I probably should’ve took a picture in the beginning around 7 rather than at 9:53pm but hey😭🤷🏽‍♂️. It was so fun and funny. I was so glad to see people just in the stands viben to the music, doing school work, or just laughing and enjoying themselves. I wanted people to come and play volleyball but I really wanted people to just get out the house. Especially if they don’t often. No experience needed PULL UP!!!🏐

As a queer Black man, inclusion is not just important to me—it’s personal. Representation shapes how we see ourselves and how boldly we move through the world. As of 2023–24, only 264 Black men played NCAA men’s volleyball, and that reminds me why visibility and community matter so much, especially in spaces where our presence has historically been limited. This event isn’t just about volleyball—it’s a chance to get out of the house, be active, and show others that they belong wherever their passion takes them. My goal is to bring people together, uplift voices in communities that often go unheard, and remind us all that diversity is strength, not statistics. by @marcellous.__
