About the speakers:

🎙️Marco Martinez is a motorcyclist, dancer, and fashion designer via Dwende, a project combining contemporary functionality and vintage aesthetics to stand the test of trend cycles. He also got his motorcycle license when he moved to LA from the Bay Area and has been inseparable from his bikes since, taking multiple road trips on his Harley to Yellowstone National Park and back. Motorcycling anchored his perspective on personal style, which began as a personal journey rooted in self-improvement since 2014.

🎙️Ethan Wong is a hobbyist photographer/composer and, unfortunately, a menswear obsessive. He rambles about wearing clothes on his blog “A Little Bit of Rest” and co-hosts the podcast “Style & Direction” with his pals MJ and Spencer. Ethan loves to get dressed up every day, and his outfits take inspiration from various aspects of vintage American style, including 1930s Apparel Arts illustrations, Ivy-Trad, the 70s, and Workwear/Milsurp. All of it is informed by his approach, called “Cinematic Dressing” (using film costuming techniques to create an outfit), and by the overall belief that clothing, even when it involves a tie, should be fun. taken in Plot 田 by @marco.pants

i rode to my third @devilstonerun and returned to sheridan, wyoming with a broken down bike

this is uncharted territory. i’m 1,200 miles from home in a place i’m unfamiliar with

i wasn’t my usual jovial self on the last night and goodbyes at camp were rushed because all i could think about was how to solve for the problem

then i asked myself: what if i just went with it? what if i released my grip and believed with every ounce of my being that this was orchestrated for me?

so i reflected. i looked back on all of the new experiences on this year’s run. acquaintances became my road dogs as we twisted through the bighorns. people who i knew only through instagram helped me load my broken down bike into a truck in the middle of Yellowstone. old friends felt like home and were my tour guides through the Black Hills. a stranger (until last night) lent me their bike so i could see a whole new side of wyoming i hadn’t seen before. pops took me in and left only when he was sure i locked in my stay at my hotel in sheridan - even lending me his beloved Sportster

this wealth could never be ascertained through a spreadsheet. the bad news is it can only be held for a most limited time. the good news is that it sinks deeply into you and will relight the spark you dreaded had been irreversibly dimmed

so i revisited theodore roosevelt’s “the man in the arena” quote that’s resonated with my motorcycle journeys. let me “fail” in the eyes of others, but i’ll never fail myself to become one of those cold, timid souls that neither know victory nor defeat by @marco.pants

But this doesn’t have to be carried alone. Because there are other wounded folks all around you, fighting in their own arenas. I was lucky that those special people came to my aid when I was at my lowest point. No hesitations, just boundless care coming from a mutual understanding that they’ve experienced the depths of those emotional trenches.

My choosing to receive these acts with humility was a small, but necessary step for me to slowly quiet that voice. It reminded me that I can visualize my self-destructive thoughts as either a torrential flood (that did not work out. look at you, you pathetic piece of sh*t) or a gentle stream (that did not work out. pause and do not destroy yoyrself. fill in that space with the sound of your own breathing).

A small rock does not carry much weight. But the rocks accumulated over the years: in the form of an unexpected act of kindness, or a simple grounded breath when the noise gets unbearable. Those rocks can help make the torrential flood a rarer occurrence when the dam breaks. by @marco.pants

it’s #fxrfriday and it’s a nostalgic day because i bought my first motorcycle almost seven years ago to this day. these are my bikes over the years.

feeling immense gratitude for all the friends i’ve made and the places i’ve gone. i don’t take this for granted.
