In the latest issue of @australiangeographic magazine, out today.

Trevor spent most of his life working as a miner in the Outback town of Broken Hill (Australia). After a back injury led him to early retirement, Trevor took up a new passion: stargazing.
Using spare materials (including a water tank and a motor from an old washing machine) he built an observatory in his own backyard, by himself. It took him 10 years to complete.

Today Trevor is in his 70s, and his observatory regularly supplies data to the biggest world space agencies, including @nasa

“Mate, who would have thought that old Trev from Broken Hill would one day work with NASA?”

I had the absolute best time photographing this story. Trevor also taught me the basics of lawn bowls (his second passion), and printed a photo of Saturn taken with his telescope during my visit, to bring back to my mom because I told him she likes astronomy 🪐

Many people to thank: the people of White Cliffs for opening their homes to me . Special mention for Netty and Pete @trappersdugout for being the firsts to welcome me in the community. I hope this project will help more people (re)discover the beauty and complexity of the Outback.

Today in the @guardian — What happens when the wind, a natural resource, suddenly becomes an industry?

Happy to share the first story and a few images from our new long-term project in northeastern Brazil, where rural communities are resisting the expansion of foreign wind energy companies.

Can the global energy transition be truly sustainable, or does it risk reproducing old logics of extraction and colonialism?

2026 Open Call Finalist – Marco Serventi

Swiss photographer from Lugano. His practice centres on the connections between people and place, examining how natural and built environments shape human life and communities. His work has been exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions at Photoville in New York and Head On Photo Festival in Sydney. His work has appeared in The Guardian, GEO Magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Australian Geographic Magazine. In 2022 he participated in the Eddie Adams Workshop in New York. He holds a degree in Film Studies from the Université de Lausanne and is a graduate of the Visual Journalism and Documentary Practice program at the International Center of Photography in New York. by @marco.serventi

Spent a couple of days in Zug (Switzerland) for @wsj, ahead of a right-wing referendum aimed at capping the country’s population at 10 million people.

Today Swiss voters rejected the initiative.

Over the course of six online sessions with Marco Serventi, you explore important video editing techniques and receive an in-depth introduction to Adobe Premiere Pro, the industry’s leading video editing software. Marco also provides an introduction to the technical aspects of filming and capturing footage, including an overview of in-camera settings, framing, camera movements, recording sound, as well as various storytelling methods that can help you craft compelling narratives. Participants are invited to build upon existing creative and technical skill sets and apply their knowledge of composition, settings, and other photographic concepts to the world of video.

By the end of our time together, you have a solid grasp of essential filming techniques, Adobe Premiere Pro editing skills, and a toolkit of creative ideas to produce engaging video projects.
