Eine Fahrradtour durch Ostthüringen, Teil 2/2

Seelingstädt
Zwirtzschen
Altenburg
Neukieritzsch

One of the places I really liked to visit was the former uranium open-cast mine there. A few years ago, I read about uranium mining by the Soviet-German joint-stock company Wismut for a school assignment. They oversaw mining operations in regions of Thuringia and Saxony to support the USSR’s nuclear programme during the arms race. I hadn’t done much research beforehand on the accessibility of these mines, and so it turned out that they are either no longer recognisable or are in the process of being sealed off.

I was a bit disappointed not to be able to see the open-cast mine, but at the same time I realised that a trip like this isn’t undertaken solely for the destination’s sake. The end was rather unspectacular too, as my front wheel was making strange noises and I was so exhausted that I took the S-Bahn for the last 20 kilometres. taken in Thüringen by @marcolischaefer

Eine Fahrradtour durch Ostthüringen, Teil 1/2
— English version below —
Tag 1:

Weimar
Jena
Kahla
Weida

This tour came about from a desire to explore the area around my new home in Weimar. Because I was feeling super bored during the semester break, I planned a tour with the aim of seeing many places on the way to Leipzig, and broadening my picture of Germany through this rural area, always knowing that I could hop back on the Regio train at any time. I used an old Diamant (GDR bike brand) bicycle with no gears, which I bought for 20€ and just did a bit of repairs.

This trip is the fifth of its kind, on which I try to visit different places and regions in Germany and thereby empirically observe similarities and differences. How do people live, what do they do in their daily lives and what concerns them? Even though these random samples do not paint a complete picture, it is still interesting to form an impression in person.
The places I have visited so far with this approach were Greifswald, Frankfurt (Oder), Tharandt (near Dresden) and Spitzingsee (Alps). taken in Thüringen by @marcolischaefer

8 Tonfiguren (repost)

Ca 12 x 10 x 10 cm

These pieces were my first series of pottery objects to explore the 3 dimensional space. Questions that popped up during the weeks of the process were: what is the difference between something to look alive and how can our fantasy create beings out of dead matter like clay. Plants, animals and human made objects morphed into what is my first approach to pottery objects. Next step is to increase the size and make the in between even more visible. taken in Bauhaus-Uni Weimar by @marcolischaefer

Exhibited in December at @irrespace with @bauhaus_grundlehre

The process started in 2023 when I travelled to one of the southeast parts of Germany just a glimpse away from Austria. In a process of de and reconstruction the photographs I took lead to a painting and a metal sculpture which I crated during my first couple of months of my studies in Weimar at Bauhaus uni.

The painting is a blurred, foggy landscape, a gaze from the midst of a hike towards the neighbouring mountain and the river flowing though the valley. The film with what I was photographing was expired and some soft purple can be seen. I hadn’t looked at the photos for a long time but I could recall this fading colour and so it shaped my memory of that trip so much that when I recall my hikes I see them always with the purple, green and turquoise colour palette. This made it just obvious that the painting of the Mountain View had to be painted with this colour palette.

About a year ago these photographs and my whole trip felt so useless at some point that I cut them up to at least use parts of it for something. I ended up cutting almost every photograph to how I call it extract the shapes of nature. My initial workflow was to collage them and use the compositions and forms in my paintings. But when I saw the metal plates in the workshop for the first time in March, the next day I had the idea of building this and when I finally had the opportunity to build them it took only a couple of days to prepare and finish it. taken in Weimar, Germany by @marcolischaefer

Andalucía, October 2024
Setenil de las bodegas, Ronda, Malaga
Part 2

Even though I went on this trip last year in late October, these versions were scanned again last week. It is such a nice feeling to have the control over the digitalisation process of the film. I had these scanned in the beginning of the year but I was not really happy with how they turned out, so it was the first roll that came to mind trying out the scanner.
To drive through that part of Spain inspired me a lot and I was so sad to not have just stayed in these mountains for a couple of days to paint and explore by foot… taken in Andalucía, Spain by @marcolischaefer

October 24, Andalucía part 1

Setenil de Las Bodegas, Ronda, Malaga

Last year in late October, me and my family did a small vacation in Malaga and went on a day trip to Ronda and Setenil de las bodegas. The first two days I was on my own and explored Malaga. Because I didn’t knew what to do with myself I sat down in the afternoon at an outdoor table of a small bar and drank a beer while enjoying the late summer heat. After I was asked to stand up for other guests who reserved a table, I found myself standing with my drink in my hand and no free table left. I approached a group of locals and they gave me a recommendation for a bar right around the corner. Even though my Spanish is not that good, after a day of being surrounded by it I could keep up some conversations with strangers in that bar. I chatted with the bartender and after his shift we were drinking together and he told me there is a concert of his friends. After getting a delicious focaccia I tried to get to the venue. It took forever because I was already pretty tipsy. In front of the place I recognised some people from the bar and went inside with them. It was a band called Orina and I enjoyed their live performance quite a lot. After the gig I we were sitting outside on the sidewalk chatting for a bit, but realised I was too drunk and tired to stay longer and the time I needed to walk home was a sign that it was the right decision. Truly a night to remember.

Concrete jungle in Shanghai, August 25

Living and urban architecture is definitely one of the biggest contrast to what I experienced so far. At first sight it seems like a complete dissolving of individuality, but when you take your time to take a closer look, you can see the creativity in everyday life to shape the space and customise the environment. These buildings seemed like they were created to be customised. The living space doesn’t end where the walls are. Plants clothes and food get hung up on metal structures sometimes reaching several meters. I could just stand there for hours in front of buildings like on the first couple of slides, going from apartment to apartment with my eyes. Because behind every window there is a story to be told. taken in 上海 Shanghai China by @marcolischaefer

August 2025, 35mm, developed in Shanghai.

As I spend a day alone in Phuket I decided to go to this view point called black rock. I walked one or two hours forth and back and had a lovely scenic sunset. I saw these huge birds with a white head that were circling the sky over and over again. This golden statue was part of a small village where some monks lived. On that day I really loved just to walk around and look around what surprise may be around the next corner. The weirdest thing was probably a bird or frog that made sounds that were building up forever just to suddenly stop, similar to a public alarm. taken in Phuket, Thailand by @marcolischaefer
