What can a 19th-century shell collection tell us about biodiversity today? Quite a lot, actually. The digitization project of the extraordinary mollusc collection of Baron Enrico Pirajno of Mandralisca, preserved for over 150 years in the Museo Mandralisca in Cefalù, Sicily, Italy, was completed. The collection includes more than 2600 records of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial molluscs from all over the world. Every specimen has been photographed, relabeled with a unique identifier, taxonomically revised, and catalogued in a digital database. The goal? To make this historically and scientifically important collection accessible to researchers, museum professionals, and the public. Natural history museums are more than exhibition spaces, they are archives of life on Earth. Historical collections like this one can help scientists study how biodiversity has changed over time, track species distributions, and better understand the past of our ecosystems. The task was part of the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC) and the Itineris projects, supporting the digital future of Italy’s natural history heritage and helping reconnect museums, science, and communities.

My piece for the 5th Premio Italiano di Paleoarte!
Inspired by the Jurassic collections I and my volunteering colleagues had the privilege of working with at the Museo Gemmellaro.
Seeing all these beautiful, overlooked creatures – dozens upon dozens of species of brachiopods, molluscs, arthropods and PLANTS that shared the world with the more charismatic dinosaurs and pterosaurs, I was inspired to bring them all together – land and sea, predator and prey, plant and animal – in death if not in life, as a tropical storm in Jurassic Bavaria might have, and as fossilisation did.
I was inspired by the "Vanitas" motif in still lifes, often using shells and fowl in its depiction of mortality. I was actually going to include a few more sea creatures and more detail on the plants, but I ran out of time 😅

Anyway thanks to all who encouraged me and appreciated the effort ♥️ by @marcotedesco1997

"She Painted Fire Across the Skyline"

I worked on this a few minutes at a time for, like, a year, because it never felt like a priority. If I were to do it from scratch today, on proper paper and with more confidence, it would probably be done in a week and come out better, but still, the point stands that I really like the aesthetic of the sky seen through tree branches. Vaguely inspired by the Agalloch song of the same title, an immature but very evocative composition. by @marcotedesco1997

I could have posted this yesterday because it's all lovey-dovey but I was studying. From last spring and one of the first things I managed to paint really quickly (in one weekend, if I recall correctly). Inspired by a cute real-life #ringneckparrot couple I saw in a park on a coral tree like this a couple of years ago.

Nearly a month has passed since I posted this so I think it's about time I gave it the caption I meant to write.

2018 felt long. I don't remember any other recent year that was so dense with development for me. I started teaching myself to play guitar and fell in love with music theory in the process, I started trying to get a bit more "serious" about painting, I participated in things I wouldn't have seen myself capable of just a year prior, and of course all the while I studied in and outside of university. I think I've come out of all that more conscious of myself and of the situation of the world in which we live in. I feel a bit wiser, maybe a bit more worried and definitely a bit fuller than I may have done at this time of year in 2018. So my hope for 2019 is not for a less challenging year, but to be better at meeting the challenges with a lighter, calmer spirit.

Oh, and speaking of being concerned, this is a little thing I did with a sunset scene I saw some time ago, but reimagined in a somewhat apocalyptic context. I recently read a pretty terrifying article about the dropping number of insects all over the world and what their "functional extinction" might mean for our future (spoiler: ecosystemic and economic catastrophe and radical change). I tried to picture what the world I know would look like without enough pollinators, for example, my reasoning being that some plants that rely more on self-pollination, apomixis or wind-pollination (anything from pines to brambled to oaks to dandelions) would fare better than more insect-dependant species. With that in mind I imagined at least some of our urban wildlife, like these two pigeons here, managing to hang on in a sadder, less colourful world. Let's just hope it doesn't come to that point. by @marcotedesco1997

Since it's supposedly winter now I'll share this little thing I did on a weekend last spring. It's pretty much the least original idea I could have come up with but I had fun doing it, and I think it fits the wintry, twilit mood of the black metal I was listening to while painting it.

I get treated to these views every time I donate blood. The donation centre overlooks the sea and there's a little staircase descending to a hidden grotto carved by the waves. It's pretty mythical-looking and the whole experience is rejuvenating. by @marcotedesco1997
