BREAK OF THE DAY — LAGUNDRI BAY, NIAS, INDONESIA

Lagundri is a right-hand reef point on the southern tip of Nias, and
the 2005 earthquake lifted the whole reef about a meter — which is why
it barrels harder and more often now than it did when the first surfers
found it. It needs a long-period south swell to line up, and today it
has one: 16 seconds out of the SSW, well overhead on the sets, with the
wind sitting light offshore and the surface glassy. First light is the
window before the trades pick up.

Long-period groundswell, offshore wind, and a reef built to shape it.
Nothing's missing.

Well, overhead over a shallow, live reef is not a wave for anyone still
learning to read a line-up. Know the keyhole, know the exit, and give
the pecking order its due.

Some waves have a reputation. This one has a fault line.
