When you're lucky, a passage ambushes you at just the right moment. That happened to me this morning.

If you're in your 50s or older, this is an amazingly wise perspective on framing your life stage. Regardless of your age, it is an invocation, urging us to live our lives freely and fully. Grazie Mille, Rachel...

From Rachel Kushner's essay "The Hard Crowd", the grand finale of her eponymous collection.

"You are busy being born the whole first long ascent of life, and then, after some apex, you are busy dying: that's the logic of the line, its syntax, as I interpret.
'Being born' here is an open and existential category: the gaining of experience, a living intensely in the present, after which comes the long period of life when a person is finished with the new. This dying doesn't have to be negative. It too is an open and existential category of being: the age when the bulk of your experience, the succession of days lived in the present, are mostly over. You turn reflective, interior, to examine and sort and tally. You reach a point where so much is behind you, but its scenes continue to exist somewhere, as memory and absence at once, as images you'll never see again.

None of it matters; it is gone. But it all matters; it lingers. The whole of youthful experience has slid away, the years and the people, the moments and feelings. In all that loss, a person continues to locate little tokes of joy from new and surprising places. Still learning, still becoming. Busy being born, and busy dying. You have a present, a now, even as you drag with you a snowballing bulk of what was. Sometimes you spike a new joy, you really do, and sometimes you hit an old one, and the more you've lived the more there are of the old ones."

Such a privilege to be on the prestigious jury for The @art_market_minds Conference last week, led by the wonderful Louise Hamlin and Jean-Baptiste Costa de Beauregard, and owned by our investor @fredericjousset.

It was a pleasure to review the applications alongside such brilliant minds: Deputy CEO of Beaux Arts Jean-Baptiste Costa de Beauregard, AXA XL’s Global Chief Underwriter for Fine Art & Specie Jennifer Schipf, Global General Manager of @crozierfinearts James Hendy, Managing Director of Hallett Independent Adam Prideaux, Cultural Strategist @marcspiegler, and NVIDIA Director of Startups Tobias Halloran.

We were treated to some incredible applications from companies with the drive and ambition to disrupt the status quo, bringing fresh strategies on how to respond to our shrinking market and audiences in the sector. It was so interesting to read about innovative approaches to the integration of AI trained imagery, as well as the diversification of audiences and revenues, and so much more.

A huge congratulations to @natalyadoris_, founder of MENRVA, on a well-deserved win! I look forward to following your exciting work using technology to break down barriers between audiences and artworks, making the art world more accessible and nurturing new interest. A real strength of the model is how it centres human relationships, and uses technology to enhance and encourage this real-world connection. by @marcspiegler

Long before 15-second TikTok hits, Ryuchi Sakamoto foresightedly pointing to music as a thing we too rarely focus upon in modern life. From Elizabeth Lennard's 1984 film "Tokyo Melody." by @marcspiegler

A fascinating lecture with @marcspiegler at @themerode.brussels

His discussion strongly resonated with a principle at the heart of my own work:

Art is not just about price. It is about the entire ecosystem that sustains value.

As the market changes, how we manage, preserve and build value matters as much as how we acquire it.

Art Galleries Are Still Not OK—Now What?

Here’s a snippet from the latest episode of The Baer Faxt Podcast where Josh Baer sits down with Marc Spiegler (@marcspiegler), Cultural Strategies Consultant, former CEO of Art Basel, and author of the New York Times piece that set the art world talking—‘Art Galleries Are Not Okay’—along with Amy Cappellazzo (@acappellazzo), one of the best in the business and Founder of @artintelligenceglobal. Between the three of them, there’s over a century of experience in the art world—and they’re not here to commiserate.

From the structural failures that predate the current crisis, to price transparency, to a student’s idea that might actually save galleries money, this is an honest conversation about the gallery model that has struggled to adapt to changing conditions. Is FOMO a business model? (No.) Is hope a strategy? (Also no.)

Head to the link in bio to listen, or wherever you get your podcasts 🐻📠
