![Marcus DeLoach as Fléville & Fouquier-Tinville 🎶⚖️
Andrea Chénier takes place on two sides of a revolution. In our production, so does Marcus DeLoach!
In Act I, he is Fléville: a novelist and wit, a charming guest at the Countess di Coigny’s party, a man of the world before the world changes. In Act III, Marcus returns as Fouquier-Tinville: the public prosecutor of the Revolutionary Tribunal, the man who drives Andrea Chénier toward the guillotine.
A graduate of @juilliardschool with a Doctorate from @riceuniversity’s @shepherd_school, @marcus.deloach20 has built a career at the center of American opera for over two decades. As a principal artist of @nycopera he sang Count Almaviva, Schaunard, and many others. He has appeared in leading roles with @lyricopera, @operaphila, @seattleopera, @bostonlyricopera, @operatheatrestl, and stages across Europe including Opera Ireland in Dublin and Teatro Comunale di Balzano in Italy. He has performed in concert with the @nyphilharmonic, the @londonsymphonyorchestra, and the @munich_philharmonic under conductors including @maestromuti and Lorin Maazel. In 1997 he was unanimously voted the first-place winner of London’s inaugural @wigmore_hall International Song Competition. This year, he reprises the role he originated (Sen. Joseph McCarthy) in Fellow Travelers at Seattle Opera, @portlandopera, and @sandiegoopera.
The @nytimes called him “a fine baritone who puts words across with clarity and naturalness.” The @bostonglobe described his work as “vocally secure and nuanced, projecting midcentury alpha-male swagger but also glimpses of the void within.” And @thetimes wrote of his singing: “a fervent desire to communicate, and, above all, that elusive fusion of instinct and understanding which sparks a quality of imagination transcending mere accomplishment.”
This May, he makes his OperaDelaware debut—charming us in Act I and condemning us in Act III.
