Explore Twisting Wool into Thread: Works by Marcy Chevali, on view in the Karl & Helen Burger Gallery at Kean University from September 8 through December 4, 2026. This exhibition presents fifteen works by Marcy Chevali, whose intricate sculptures combine borosilicate glass, metal, and fiber to create delicate net-like structures that explore themes of strength, fragility, transparency, and connection. #keangalleriesandcollections #keanuniversity #twistingwoolintothread #marcychevali #art taken in The Galleries at Kean by @marcychevali

Marcy Chevaliโ€™s work is on view through August 29 in, โ€œCatching Fire: resilient alchemies in a burning worldโ€.

@marcychevali

Marcy will introduce her work on August 22, 2:00-3:30PM, as part of a gallery walkthrough with curator Alison McNulty @mcnulty_alison and three other exhibiting artists.

Marcy writes:

"A net can be used to keep dangerous things away from us or to keep precious or fragile things safe and close to us. I make nets out of glass, using a very specific and controlled flame to melt and bend rods of glass. Fire is sometimes though of as something destructive and fear inducing. However in this body work, the torch is very generative. Although glass is breakable, these sculptures have the strength of the grid. If one area is compromised, the remainder of the piece retains its strength as it is reinforced at each connection. It can also be reintroduced to the torch to repair any cracks in the same way that it was originally made.

In these pieces, brass wire hangs slack from the glass instead of continuing the contour of the glass seamlessly. Iโ€™m interested in these shifts and how they can be metaphors. This work has themes of transformation, interconnectedness and resilience. Similar to fire, it has a purity and sense of ephemerality.โ€

Iโ€™ve always enjoyed an artist residency. Time and space dedicated to your work is always amazing. Each one is unique in terms of location and landscape and details like food and studio space. Somehow thereโ€™s often a particular magic of being exactly what you need at the time. Iโ€™m so grateful for this past month at Monson Arts where I had the time, space and the experience of setting up my own flameworking studio which Iโ€™m hoping to do more of.

Iโ€™m excited to share some new sculptures in A False Security opening tonight at Aicon Contemporary at 35 Great Jones Street. This group exhibition examines the fragile, performative, and often illusory nature of protection in a world shaped by uncertainty. Itโ€™s up until March 21.

Iโ€™ve heard someone say that color gets in the way. White can be incredibly hard to describe, I tโ€™s full of mystery and contradiction. Itโ€™s also extremely symbolic, some of which I embrace as it follows themes in my work and other parts I wish did not exist. Iโ€™ve heard white described as embarrassing (to wear). It doesnโ€™t allow us to hide from the fact that we are a body, with bodily functions. I do lean into the vulnerability in my work. Clear takes on the light and the color of its surroundings. It reflects and distorts things around it.
