After presenting Deconstruction of Type at HKU Exposure, I’m excited to share another side of the project during Dutch Design Week :)
The installation will feature additional letter combinations, building on those shown at HKU Exposure and offering new ways to explore how typography can take shape in space. The prototype model will also be on display, offering a closer look at the process behind the project!🤫🔍

From 2027, NS, the Dutch national railway operator, will introduce numbers for Dutch train lines, making it easier for passengers to recognise and navigate the network. Inspired by this change, I explored my own approach to designing a nationwide railway map of the Netherlands 🚉🇳🇱

The colours are inspired by the colours of the trains themselves, creating a direct link between the map and the trains you see on the tracks. I also made sure the colours work for people with colour vision deficiencies, so the different lines remain easy to tell apart.

Turns out, fitting the entire Dutch railway network into one clear system is quite the puzzle… 😅 This is my take on what a numbered railway network for the Netherlands could look like!

Folded b - Exploring typography beyond the screen.. 📲

For this practice-based research project, I started wondering what happens when you take a letter out of the digital space and treat it as a physical object.
Instead of simply designing a b on a screen, I wanted to physically manipulate its form. I started folding, bending and stretching the letter, exploring how far I could transform it while keeping it recognisable as a b. The idea of the folded b emerged from this process.

From there, I experimented with different materials, moulds, 3D processes and production techniques. Each experiment showed me how strongly materials and techniques can influence the form of a letter.

This project became an important step towards my graduation project, where typography shifted from something purely graphic into a spatial and experimental field of research 🔬

100 days. One letter. One marker. One A4 sheet ✍️

Every day, I typographed the letter ‘M’, working within the same self imposed constraints. What started as a simple exercise gradually became a challenge to explore repetition, form and limitation 🔄 Which resulted in a big collection of different M’s!

After 100 days, the complete series was compiled into two thick, hand-bound link-stitch books I made myself. One printed with black ink on white paper, and the other with white ink on black paper, which completely shifts how you perceive the shapes of the letters. Later, I also presented the work as a projection ⬜️⬛️

In my first year of Graphic Design at HKU, I made a dictionary with only analogue techniques for a language system I invented: Spoordenwel.

The Spoordenwel language system is inspired by spoonerisms (slips of the tongue where the initial letters or sounds of two words are swapped). But Spoordenwel takes this a step further: a Spoordenwel word consists of two existing Dutch words. When you swap their initial letters, you get another combination of two existing Dutch words, opening up a whole new range of possible meanings...

Deconstruction of Type | HKU Exposure 2026

Letters are everywhere, yet we rarely stop to look at them beyond their function. With Deconstruction of Type, the project I graduated with, I explored typography as a visual and spatial system rather than simply a carrier of language. The installation invites visitors to experience typography not just as something to read, but as something to see, move through and perceive differently.
