🐾 MEET THE NEIGHBOURS 🦜

We may not be in a game reserve, but that does not mean the wildlife stays away. Quite the opposite, at times.

At Marepe Mountain View, our neighbours come in all shapes and sizes: rom the elusive red duiker and the wonderfully curious Samango monkeys to genets, civets, porcupines and, if you are lucky, even the secretive African wildcat. With summer approaching, the chameleon are frequent visitors in high numbers. And that is before we even start talking about the birdlife.

Some encounters happen in broad daylight, others are reserved for those who happen to be looking in the right direction at just the right moment. No game-drive vehicle required, just a little patience, a curious eye and an appreciation for the smaller wonders of the bush.

Because here, nature is not an excursion. It is part of everyday life. 🌿

One last blaze of orange before winter lets go. 🍂

Our Mountain Aloes (Aloe marlothii) have been putting on their spectacular display through the dry winter months, and now, slowly, the colour is beginning to fade.

Soon, the mountain will turn green again. But for now, there is still a little fire left in the landscape.

Today is Heritage Day in South Africa: a day to celebrate the many stories, traditions and cultures that make this country what it is 🇿🇦

And here at Marepe Mountain View , one of those stories is quite literally right outside our windows.

Long before name Mariepskop appeared on maps, the mountain was known as Thaba ya Moholoholo, “The Great One”. It became the stronghold of Chief Maripe Mashile in the 19th century. During the Moholoholo War of 1864, Maripe and his people used the steep mountain slopes and enormous boulders to defend their refuge against their enemies.
The mountain eventually became known as Mariepskop, after the chief himself.

Today, we look at Mariepskop and see the magnificent backdrop to our villas. But there is so much more to that view and p erhaps that is what makes a place truly special.

This Heritage Day, we are grateful to be here, looking out at a mountain that has been telling its stories for generations.

Some mornings are worth getting up for. 🌄

As the first light reaches the Mariepskop escarpment, the mountains slowly change colour to deep shades of orange, revealing a different mood with every passing minute.

This is the view that greets you each morning at Marepe Mountain View, high on the slopes of the escarpment, with a front-row seat to the Lowveld’s most beautiful landscape.

No filter, no editing, just Mother Nature doing what she does best.
