Mary Whitehead’s path into music law began through a love of music, storytelling and the people behind the scenes who help bring creative work to life. Coming from a suburban working-class background where careers in law didn’t feel visible, it was discovering the music industry through study, live music and hands-on projects that shifted the direction of her career.

After working across Warner Music Group, Universal Music Publishing Group and Mushroom Music Publishing, Mary found herself increasingly drawn toward copyright, contracts and artist rights. That curiosity eventually led her back to university to study law part-time while raising her daughter, Willow.

Today, as a Senior Associate at Sanicki Lawyers, Mary works closely with artists and industry clients across copyright, commercial agreements and strategic career decisions. Her work spans recording and publishing deals, catalogue sales, disputes and helping creatives better understand and protect the value of their rights.

Alongside her legal practice, Mary is passionate about education, advocacy and helping artists feel more confident asking questions early, understanding their rights and building sustainable careers with clarity and support around them.

This week I closed a wonderful chapter at Media Arts Lawyers. It’s been such a privilege to work alongside some of this country’s most talented and hardworking artists.

When David opened the door, I was a newly admitted lawyer and a solo mum just finding her feet. Along the way, I found a purpose and stability that would be life changing.

I’m especially grateful for the experiences I’ve had with Willow in the wings! From being dragged up to Sydney for my first mediation, to the road trip to Kiama for the first panel, and that 3am start so Mum could go advocate for performers in Canberra.

Feeling nothing but gratitude for the opportunities, the MAL team, and the amazing projects and clients who shaped this chapter. Onwards. ❤️ by @mareswhitehead
