Today was the grand opening of the Black Cat Theatre Care in Tulsa. It is also my one year improv anniversary, so it’s fitting that I got to start my second year as an improviser performing with some of the funniest, most wonderful people that I know, once with Woody, the house team I’m on, and with The 66 Kicks.

If you had told me a year ago that I would be doing improv with a professional team less than a year into it, I would probably have said, “that sounds crazy and also like something I would do”. I’ve never been able to love something and not make it my whole personality. And while my fear of improvising was (and low key is) enormous, I had an inkling after the first class that it would become an important part of my journey.

(Particular love to my Woody team mates who have literally been with me since day 1 and I am pinching myself that we get to keep playing. Also, not pictured is our fantastic coach, Eric. 🖤)

This community has been so lovely and welcoming and it’s such a gift that I get to be a part of it.

I’m also so thrilled that I get to do it with Lisa, who is beautiful in every way and also so hilarious. I can’t imagine doing this without you.

Here’s to the Black Cat and the community that Cody and Arch are creating.
And here’s to year two!
May it be full of laughter and silliness and joy and meaning.

I love this group of people so much.

If you don’t already know, I’ve been taking Improv classes at @cmsimprovtulsa since last September. I was excited and scared, but it’s been such a joy. I took the class to help improve my acting, but I was more shocked than anyone that I came to enjoy improvising for its own sake. And the people I’m with played a huge part in making it so wonderful. Most of us have been in class together the whole time and I couldn’t have asked for a better cohort.

Arch is a remarkable teacher, one of the best teachers I’ve ever had the chance to work with, and I feel like I’ve grown so much through the process. And every person contributes to creating a safe environment to play and have fun.

We had our Level 3 performance yesterday and we start Level 4 in a couple of weeks.

The state of the world is mostly terrible, but this class and this group have been a shining light in my life.

What a gift. by @margaretstall

I sometimes get a little overwhelmed when I try to talk about the things that are impacting me. This fall has been wildly transformative and I’m still in the midst of all the ways that is true. And much of it will likely never make it on to a social media platform, although I’m happy to talk about it in person.

Two things that have deeply impacted me are 1) taking my first Meisner class and 2) starting improv training.

I came in to both classes with specific goals. In Meisner, I wanted to have 6 audition cuts that were ready to GO! (Lol.) And in improv, I just wanted to develop another skill to make me a better actor. And, like most of my VERY SPECIFIC PLANS, it didn’t happen the way I planned at all and what actually transpired was so much better and more meaningful.

But it’s also so hard to explain, though I’ll try. And the lessons are so simple. But simple isn’t easy.

What I have been learning is how to trust my voice and to believe that I’m enough and I don’t have to work so hard to “impress”. In fact, it’s not about being impressive at all. It’s about finding what’s true and letting that shine through. And also enjoying that there is no “right” choice, only endless possibilities. And I’ve been learning how to let MYSELF come through the work.

This video is, I feel, one of the truest, most vulnerable pieces of my singing that exists. I wanted to let myself explore the idea of “public solitude” and it made me cry to experience it and process it. (The quality of the video is poor, but the feeling I had singing it and even watching it are bigger than the technicals.)

I am unbelievably grateful to @meisnerinmusic for creating such a beautifully safe space to do this work. And to the incredible women in my class who let me be messy and curious and frustrated and encouraged me to keep going when Meisner kind of kicked my ass.
And, while this video isn’t about improv, thank you to Arch at @cmsimprovtulsa for helping me play and fail and discover all the ways that my brain isn’t my enemy and I can trust my ideas and take a ride without knowing the destination.

This was not a beginning, because I’ve been training a long time. But the process is the gift. by @margaretstall

The Importance of Being Earnest has always been a dream show for me and I can’t believe I got to do it with such a remarkable group of people. This was the best theatre experience I’ve ever had. Top 3, easy. I know it closed a couple of weeks ago, but I miss the show and the people more than I can say.

First, a comment on Gwendolen. I love her so much. She felt like home and it felt so easy to embody her from the very beginning. She gave me a safe place to play and explore a part of me that I’ve never been able to as an actor. I hope I have the chance to play her again someday soon; I was not ready to say goodbye to her.

Second, every person involved in this production was encouraging, kind, and committed to making this show special. Which is the whole point.

Jason was a remarkable director. Intentional, thoughtful, and sensitive to what each actor needed. He wanted us to have strong points of view and guided us through that process. I’ll do just about anything to have the chance to work with him again.

I could say something about every person involved, but I’ll hold off. I’m starting the process of diving into Carousel and I needed a little Earnest send off.

My unending gratitude to @okworldstage for making this experience possible. by @margaretstall

I’m exhausted and I can’t sleep and I’m SO HAPPY and terribly overwhelmed in a good way and I will be speaking in my best (ish) approximation of a British accent for an insufferable length of time and I’m very sorry and I’m OBSESSED with this remarkable group of people.

What a joy it’s been to bring it this show and Gwendolen to life.

I think I could happily play this role forever. Or at least longer than the two weeks I’ll get. But every moment has sparkled and I’m brimming over with delight.

📸: the incomparable photographer and all around darling of the theatre community in Tulsa, @andrew_of_nichols . Thank you for making my face (which I think is better in motion) look good.

I’ll share more photos and better words (maybe) in the future, but until then, GET THEE TO THE THEATRE! by @margaretstall

Another day, another headshot!! I will eventually get tired of posting them, but right now I still love them. 🖤

I still can’t get over Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. I can get really swept up in a story, but once I walk away I realize it wasn’t really as wonderful as I thought. But this is not one of those books. It really exceeded my expectations and I know this will be one I reread.

Nighttime/Sunset walks are the best walks. I’ve started going without my headphones and it’s so peaceful. It’s easy to get into a cycle of always needing someone’s voice in my ear, whether it’s music, a podcast, or an audiobook. I know that I am way too online and I’m literally locking my phone in a box these days, because my impulse control with my phone is pretty abysmal. Everytime I go through one of my little “phones are the enemy and I need to cut the toxic ties to this consumerist trap” phases, I’m always clearer minded, more peaceful, and more grounded. So, we will ignore the irony of this post and have high hopes for what will be possible once I create more space from technology.

I also watched the second season of Shiny Happy People and I have so many thoughts and feelings. That world is one that I know well and left 10 years ago, but I still deal with the scars of that community to this day. (I was not in Teen Mania, but the reach of their theology and rhetoric was far reaching in youth groups and ministries in the 90s and 00s.) I realized that my “toxic exes” are the organizations I’ve been a part of and it also explains why I love talking about cults so much.

Anyway, that doesn’t have anything to do with my pretty (and expensive, which is why I’m sharing so many) headshots. My deconstruction journey, which has been going on for 10 years, is just one of the things that I think about all the time. My other fave topic is singing, of course, so I’m sure my next post will be about something voice related, because what else is there? Am I right?!

Bon Iver will always be my safe place.

This is the energy I’m bringing into this week!!

So many things are out of our control and I’m riddled with the desire to just run away to the woods never to be seen or heard from again. It’s in conflict with my desire to be seen and loved.

We contain multitudes.

The thing I’m trying to rest in is that, while my sphere of influence is small, it’s not nothing. (It’s also not pejorative. Social media makes us think a small reach is insignificant, but it’s a lie meant to sell us something. Capitalism is wild. (And evil.)) I am able to show up and do good work and enjoy life and advocate for others. I am allowed to fail and mess up and it’s not a part of my identity. I am allowed to succeed and have victories and that is not a part of my identity either.

Winning and Losing are terrible sources of self worth or meaning. The Process is the thing, wherein our meaning is made, to borrow and bastardize from Shakespeare.

I discover and create who I am in every moment as time unfurls before me. In this way, we are all Artists.

(This doesn’t happen in a vacuum and I’m aware of how privileged I am to be able to concern myself with such things, because I am not concerned with where my next meal will come from, if at all. Those of us with some measure of privilege should use that privilege to ease suffering in the world.)

((Today, she’s a philosopher, I guess?))

I’m not totally sure what I’m doing. All I know is that I’m trying to embody my values more deeply, put some beauty into the world, and invest in purpose.
I hope you have a good week.

Pets and books are ✨🖤✨.

Many thanks to @breamullen for snagging this picture of me with my best friend, Winnie.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is super long, but also wonderful. It’s been a slow read, because Love Island took up a lot of July for me. (I mean, what was I supposed to do? NOT watch it? What a wild thought.) But I’m obsessed with this book and will probably read Piranesi later this year. Susanna Clarke might be a new fave.

Jeri, of course, has my whole heart. I love my little bat more than anything.

I saw someone with a shirt that said,
“Read books
Lift weights
Fight fascism”

I think that’s pretty good advice. So go forth and read, lift, fight. by @margaretstall
