Feels like I’ve been saying goodbye a lot lately. To those I love, may your hearts be lighter than a feather.

A poem about grief by Karoline Brændjord

No ballerina springs forth when I lift the lid
of the coffin. There, in silence, lies your body. It is
closer to me than it is to you. I have brought with me
an old music box and I twist until the glockenspiel plays.
I am not calling you home. This is merely a lullaby.

The creek can't carry my reflection downstream.

This canopy used to be so thick that the light arrived in pieces. A forest already ancient when I found it, a place that felt as though it had been waiting for me and would continue waiting long after I was gone.

The creek runs wider now, over excavated stones. Along the exposed banks are new leaves, eager to accept the deluge of sunlight. I am now older than the trees here. The forest I knew will never return. Something new is taking its place.

Memory blunts, a xerox of a xerox of a xerox.

These woods granted me my first taste of freedom. High school debauchery disguised as a camping trip, our first crude experiment in finding ourselves. I remember laughing so hard I fell out of my camp chair, spilling bong water all over my clothes. Sorry, Mom. I didn't partake. I was straight edge... but I could have at least done that load of laundry.

I find myself returning after decades of growth, decay, disaster, and evolution. Trees uproot, boulders tumble, even rivers change course in time. As the landscape is altered, so am I. I am not the camper who came here to find himself. Where once there was an urgency in knowing what I was to become, I learned to let the years have their say, to accept the blemishes and patina as part of the whole.

Succinctly, after twenty years, my ass got fatter, my bitch got badder. taken in Big Ivy by @margaritas.at.the.mall

Just out for a rip with ma blonde up in the Great White North. Absolute beaut of a rip. Ran into your Canadian girlfriend. She’s a real nailgun.

Saw a couple loons out on the lake. One of 'em was absolutely hootin'. Buddy goes, “Beauty.” I go, “Beauty.” That’s Canada, bud. taken in Degrassi High by @margaritas.at.the.mall

Steak too lobstery, juice too buttery.

Auf Wiedersehen @churning.man, sinfully proud of y'all for taking such a big swing this year. It was rawer than my uncle Jeb's milk. I love this little thing of ours. by @margaritas.at.the.mall
