What traces do we leave behind? For a long time now, I’ve been confronted with one of my own through the windows I pass. When the window screen came into being and took off while I was a young design student, a teacher warned me about becoming ”the window screen woman.” It sounded like a life sentence. But today I look tenderly at what has shaped me, which is just one of the many things that define us.
I started art school because I simply wanted to spend my time on what I loved most. That it turned into design was a kind of coincidence of circumstances. A piece of folded cardboard that I set into production myself became an unexpected school and led me to worlds and new interests I could never have imagined. I’ve explored everything I came across along the way, and the small thing, in the form of a product, took on an ever greater perspective. What surrounds production (the people, the factories, the economy) became just as important as exploring form, material and product, and seeing what affects what. Everything is connected, and nothing exists in a vacuum. Political and economic decisions made here affect people in several links of the chain, both here and far away, even if it’s only about a piece of cardboard. Understanding and conveying the complex, which is anything but black and white and has no simple answers, is what keeps me going.

From the project No Innocent Objects. Playing with the idea by Ellen Ruppel Shell and her excellent book Cheap where she looks into how we are fostered into accepting faults and easily breakable products. The photo was published in the magazine BRAVE #2, a KU project for @konstfack 2011. #noinnocentobjects. Photo by @karin_bjorkquist by @margotbarolo

I’m so impressed by the students work this year!🤩 I feel so much hope about the new generation: they get the skills, use their work and brains to adress the problems with subtile or grand gestures. They use design as a mean to play with ideas, form and different methods independently. So proud to be a part of Konstfack!❤️‍🔥 some pics, mostly from ID bachelor and master students but also from IA and other faculties @konstfack hurry up and visit the spring exhibition until Sunday 😃 by @margotbarolo
