Good habits can travel a long way. Sometimes even across generations.

1996 — #cycling with my two children in Perth, Australia.

Later, a cycling tour in Lisbon.

Then my husband cycling to work in the UK.

My husband and our first grandson.

And me today — still finding ways to keep moving, whether that’s cycling, walking, spin, tennis or golf.

Different decades. Different countries. Different generations.

The habit may change shape, but it doesn’t have to disappear.

Those photographs made me think about some of the choices we’ve made in designing our new GPFI Botswana workplace at Main Mall.

If you want to walk or cycle to work, what happens when you arrive?

We’ve thought about that too.

Shower and changing facilities.
Space to hang your work clothes.
Mirrors and electrical points for shaving, grooming or drying your hair.

And once you’re inside: opportunities to move throughout the day, an on-site gym, places to pause and reset, and even edible plants growing within the workplace.

None of these things creates a good habit for us.

But our surroundings can make good habits easier to start, return to and sustain.

Sometimes an old photograph reminds us how long a good habit has travelled.

And sometimes seeing the next generation doing it is motivation to keep going.

Walk. Cycle. Move. Pause. Start again.

Because the workplace is part of life too.

Another part of our GPFI Botswana workplace at Main Mall is ready.

Small wins today.

I impressed myself.💃🏻💃🏻🥂🩷🩷

Went full curly coils on my own hair and executed like I’ve been hiding a salon license all along. Turns out there’s a hairdresser in me she just needed a mirror and a bit of confidence. I might just stay here. What do you think?

Textured. Defined. Unapologetic.

Natural hair is not “managed.” It’s mastered.

Why can Africa teach the world something important about Facilities Management?

This question lies at the heart of my forthcoming book, Facilities Management in Africa: Bridging Global Standards and Local Realities, published by Emerald Publishing and scheduled for release on 4 November 2026.

Writing this book has reinforced how much our profession gains from the knowledge, research, publications and practical experiences shared by others.

My sincere thanks to Pieter C. le Roux and Miguel Alves Agostinho for reviewing the manuscript, and to Duncan Waddell, Donna Ebeid, Farah Shoukry, Paul Erubami, John Samuel, Michael May, Karim Hassan, Gyan Awuku-Sao and Arivagara Pavithran for their professional insights and contributions through their work and published materials.

I also acknowledge my colleagues across FMCE Africa and AfricaFM, and the wider international Facilities Management, standards and governance communities whose work continues to advance our profession.

Facilities Management is ultimately about people — their safety, wellbeing and the quality of the environments in which they live, work and learn.

Africa has valuable lessons to share with the world.

Less than three months ago, this was our starting point…

An empty shell in the heart of Main Mall, Gaborone.

Today, we are approximately 90% through the transformation and getting very close to opening the doors. 🫣

The vision was never simply to create another office.

At GPFI Botswana, we wanted to rethink what a modern corporate workplace could feel like and how it could perform.

Together with our design partner @Val Interior, led by Tebogo ‘Tebby’ Modisagape and her team, we have been bringing that vision to life.

Behind what you will eventually see is a much bigger story:

Smart booking of workspaces and meeting rooms.
Real-time utility and indoor air quality monitoring.
Workplace utilisation data.
Private focus pods and collaborative spaces.
Executive meeting facilities.
Wellness areas and an on-site gym.

And importantly, we have thought about how we build — from segregation, recovery and reuse of materials during decommissioning, to responsible disposal and engaging local trades for selected furniture and features.

But I’m not showing you the finished space just yet. 😊

These photographs are where we started.

What it has become is a story for another post.

Our waiting list is now opening for corporates, teams and professionals who would like to experience the space when we open.

We can’t wait to host you.

From Empty Shell to Future-Ready Workplace.

We designed it with you in mind.

And to Keneilwe Kgaogano and Mmama William — thank you for allowing me to keep pushing the boundaries. 🥰

More of the journey to come…
