Meet our Vice Chair of Student leaders⭐️!

Name: Maria Paula Forero Pineda

Major : Social Work

Year: Senior

#WhyLwb : As a student who spoke only a little English, had no resources to attend college, and faced many difficulties, I decided to seek out every possible opportunity and found LWB. As a camper, I was welcomed by a loving community who inspired me to give it a try and helped me see the path ahead a little more clearly. Later, as an OU student i decided to be part of the team, and as part of the sponsorship committee, I learned the importance of teamwork in achieving a shared goal and ensuring that new campers had the best experience possible. Last year, I had the opportunity to serve as Vice Chair of Recruitment, connecting one-on-one with many students and understanding their needs, as well as their parents, who are sometimes even more scared about what’s next and how to support their kids.

This year, I’m coming with great expectation and excitement to work with the best family leaders; students who, like me, are passionate about serving our community and aspire to mentor the next generation, students who have all different backgrounds and life experiences but are succeeding and leading others behind them. LWB isn’t just about resources or a conference, it’s about the community we build, real connections, and inspiring many students to try new things, face their challenges, and achieve success, especially if their goal is to attend college.
I’m grateful to every member who has been part of this organization; I carry all these experiences in my heart and hope to continue contributing to this mission. by @mariaaapfp

"Házlo con miedo, pero házlo"

I remember being afraid to apply for an executive position at Latinos Without Borders; I wasn’t sure if I was capable or if it would be too much work. I received support and encouragement from those who saw potential in me, and thanks to that, I decided to go for it and did it.

Now that the year is coming to an end, I can say that I feel truly grateful for what this community has given me and for what I’ve been able to give and prove to myself!

Not only have I been able to connect with students and their families—people I can relate to and understand because I was in their shoes!—but also with an incredible community at OU. Everyone who is part of LWB is a leader in their community, an excel student, and, above all, a wonderful person.

I know that every year will bring new memories and that many more lives will be impacted by our mission. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!!

Thank you LWB for allowing me to occupy space, for giving me Vice Chair of Recruitment this year and the best team ever! For giving me an amazing exec team and friends that I can count on!!
