Intensely, in June, Maria Bergström was with us in Studio Alpha. She left behind a myriad of works. In some of them – and this delights us – we hear familiar sounds and recordings from VICC’s ever-growing archive; small fragments forming a micro-narrative within the larger whole. But this is also an essential part of listening to Maria’s music. It is not primarily concerned with melody and harmony, but with using sound to bring places into being. She says herself somewhere, or perhaps it was in our corridors, that she tells stories through sound, where the idea of presence is at the centre. The sounds meet us tenderly and poetically, intimately; they find their way beneath our skin and become presence, are presence, and leave behind a memory of presence. And it is here that the music emerges.

But within that presence, a shift also takes place. The familiar source of a sample slowly changes; through new processes and gentle additions of new sounds and layers, our listening is carried through spaces and into new ones. It seems only natural that she has also worked extensively with sound installation and sound design over the years. It is as though she hears the places she is in, but perhaps more importantly: the places she dreams of.

When, shortly after returning home, she sends over parts of what she composed here, this is perhaps what I think of most: that her music inhabits an in-between space. Between music and sound design, between abstract forms and familiar storytelling, between the recognisable and the unknown.

Bibu 2026 var en underbar dröm och jag vill jobba med teater för barn och unga så länge jag lever. Tack till alla änglar jag fick träffa, alla föreställningar jag fick uppleva och tack till Dalateatern som skeppade ner hela Gravitation till Skåne.

Det har varit så skönt att få vara tillbaka en längre tid på min födelseort och spendera tid med familjen, skogen, vännerna och kulturen. One secret each - Klyftan PLX 2025 - Tack för att jag fick öppna Klyftan innan Satelliten tog fart. Ni tog så bra hand om mig under månen och stjärnorna vid elden.
