What an honor it was to hear from thee Dr. Angela Davis, a legendary woman whose work I’ve long admired. Even more of an honor to host her + @indyurbanleague777 at the historic @walkertheatre!

Huge congrats to IUL on such a beautiful, timely, and necessary event ✨

side note: 82 where!? 😮‍💨🖤 by @mariahivey_

We were just on Clifton Street at Write-On the Poetry Spot—hoping folks would show up to what we knew could be a great thing for our scene. 11 years later, we are completely changed by what TPOM is and has become. Wow.

Closing this chapter doesn’t feel real and is anything but easy for us. Yet, we are doing it with so much love, thought and care at the center.

We love you all immensely, and we thank you for loving us—for showing up all those years ago and for continuing to support us in such beautiful ways along the journey.

The Send Off Series is a celebration of the journey, the art, the moments, the memories, and the lifelong bonds we’ve built through That Peace Open Mic. It’s a celebration for all of us.

We hope to see you there as we honor what TPOM has meant to and for our city.

With love,

One thing about us, we’re gonna wake up & randomly decide to hit the road somewhere with no plans lol. This time, the dilly dally was in Chicago. A city we love down. A city I once called home 🤎

Sn: the busier I am, the more I realize that ALL UH DIS can wait lol.

Find inspo, eat good food, rest, read, spend time with your favorite people, make the playlist for the random road trip, do the things you’ve been itching to do all month, all year. Not only will the work always be there, but we’ll actually find more work to do the longer we wait. It’s the nature of living in a country that champions hustle culture.

Resist all that. Go play. by @mariahivey_

I wrote these poems with rest and reclamation on my mind. With safety, and sanctity, and self-preservation at the center. For those of us holding space or finding it, for joy, grief, fight, love and gentleness to exist within the same body.

Many thanks to @j4kd and @kenny.aart for curating this show with love and intention. I feel so blessed to show alongside each of you @ashkrobinson, @cheqwon88 and @j4kd.

And many thanks to @aaw_artistsatwork and @bigcarpix for making it possible.

On display now at the Guichelaar gallery, housed on the @camimuseum campus, through October.

Email/DM me for pricing.

Meet AAW Artist Mariah Ivey!

Mariah Ivey is a writer, poet, musician, and curator deeply rooted in the city’s vibrant arts scene. A 2016 Art & Soul alumna, Ivey founded the genre-bending hip-hop/soul collective We Are TribeSouL in 2017 while continuing her work as a spoken word artist. Beyond the stage, she is passionate about creating accessible, community-centered arts experiences. Ivey hold s a B.A. in Africana Studies and Philosophy, an M.A. in English Creative Writing from Indiana University Indianapolis and was a 2023/24 Intercultural Leadership Institute (ILI) Fellow.

More of This: A Creative Learning Community was created in collaboration between Mariah Ivey and her community partner, the Center for Black Literature & Culture (CBLC) at the Indianapolis Central Library. The project consists of a communal writing series, book club, performances, creative talks and other activations rooted in literacy, imagination, and communal care. More of This is dedicated to adult learners (ages 18+) who have had limited access to books, reading/writing tools, and imaginative spaces that nurture voice, vision, and self-determination.

This project is guided by two commitments: literacy as liberation—reading, writing, and storytelling as practices of resistance, survival, and empowerment—and communal care & wellness—reframing the library as a sacred third space where healing and connection can flourish.

Guided by the themes of writers like Audre Lorde, Octavia Butler, Alice Walker, bell hooks, and more, the gatherings will be grounded in an ethic of love, radical care, and truth-telling. The outcomes may include a live performance, a community anthology or zine, and a digital archive of readings and resources on the library’s website for future community use.

Literacy has been on my mind. Literacy is always on my mind.

I think a lot about it & about language—who has access to it, who doesn’t, what’s done with it, made of it…

I often think about my time as a creative writing teacher in a local high school, eager & optimistic but severely challenged by reading deficits & minimal support. My former students and the brilliance they didn’t yet have language for inspire so much of what I do & dream about today.

I think about how much I enjoyed writing as a child but couldn’t find that same enthusiasm for reading because I couldn’t find myself in their literature. It took years to find language and familiarity. I’m thankful for a robust childhood & a music making family. They gave me an imagination that at one point books could not.

I think about how much my life changed when I lost myself utterly and completely in the beauty of Black literature. I fell deeper in love (and in action) during my time in Chicago 🤎

I think about Audre’s fierce commitment to language, Toni’s regard for its healing power, the day I discovered bell, and the many Black writers who wrote & are still writing our path to freedom. It’s always been a tool. Its inaccessibility is intentional.

I think about how carelessly folks use their words as others yearn to know, hold, and express themselves through it. May the power of language find & hold them both.

I think about how much we need language & literature right now. How much we need community, sacred space, more opportunities to be in person & deeply connected with one another. How we need guidance from the elders, the ancestors, and the church mothers. The artists, writers and makers too. How we need all the things that make us feel human again. Language to repair, language to destroy, language to rebuild, language to love and care and envision a world that centers radical love and care. And a safe space to learn how to do it well. We need it all. We deserve it all.

Our wellness & survival are simply dependent upon it.

Hanging onto the words, wisdom, love and prayers of Black women, always—in life and lit. How else does one journey through this world with their mind, heart, and hopes in tact?

So grateful to still be here, learning, loving & becoming.

Here’s to 31 🤎

The beauty and the healing is in the gathering. And what an honor it was to curate this one on behalf of the historic @walkertheatre ✨

Many thanks to our partners at @childrensmuseum and @waltdisneyimagineering for making this possible. The work you all are doing is incredible, and it’s such a joy to play even a small part in it.

Many thanks to @tamarawinfreyharris and @karenvaughn for carrying the night so beautifully.

To my creative family— @act_1990, @psywrn.simone, @40thousandfeet_up, @robdixonsax, @sleepynap, @lalahayan @kenyetta_dance—thank you all for saying yes and for reminding me, whether you know it or not, why we cannot and should not ever stop creating. It’s such a blessing to feel inspired.

And to Ms. @jeniferlewisforreal, thank you for saying what is on your heart, always. For the story you almost didn’t share but felt compelled to share with me anyhow and for the stories you chose to share throughout the evening. The laughter, the wisdom, the truth-telling. I’m forever in awe of the ways spirit moves.

Thank you Indy 🤎 by @mariahivey_
