When you look at my Toggl, i’m spending more time doing work on the positioning, messaging, market research, and figuring out where the actual conversion problem is for every copywriting client.

More time than I spend writing the actual copy.

Because without all that, high-converting copy can’t exist.

So obviously, “copywriter” started feeling a bit incomplete.

Copy is just the surface level of what I do. But when you dig deep, I’m over here fixing the conversion problem my client has.

So, hi. I’m Maria, your conversion specialist🫶🏽

As someone who’s written copy that’s led to her clients hitting new revenue goals, there is SO MUCH WORK that goes into the sales page before you write a single word.

It’s what leads to conversions and makes selling easier (without having to put all of your focus into visibility).

This is just one aspect of it and I talk up the rest in my free weekly newsletter.

I see this a lot: someone thinks their sales page isn’t converting, so they start changing the copy.

New headline, new CTA, or a new way of explaining the offer. But sometimes the copy isn’t the thing that needs fixing.

If the offer isn’t clear, the positioning isn’t strong, or your marketing hasn’t given people enough reason to care yet, the sales page is being asked to do a lottt of heavy lifting.

If this is making you look at your own sales page a little differently, the post is for you.

And if you want help figuring out what actually needs fixing, where I figure out your offer positioning + messaging and then write the copy?

A services page shouldn’t make someone work to figure out how they can work with you.

We sometimes treat it like a menu: here are my offers, here are the deliverables, here’s the button.

But a good services page should help someone recognise themselves in the offer, understand what makes sense for them and feel confident enough to take the NEXT step.

That was a big part of the work behind @heo__hq’s website copy, and honestly, one of my favourite things about the final result is that she can now just send people there.

If your website copy could use a little more conversion strategy behind it, I have one final website copy spot for the year with a November kickoff date.

A conversion rate of 100% means nothing if only one person saw your offer.

Because people buy when they know and REMEMBER your offer exists.

This is an extract from a previous newsletter. I share an edition every Wednesday about messaging, copy, and conversions.

when it comes to most offers?
Your buyer already know they have a problem, they’re just looking for the right expert to trust.

So over explaining sometimes looks like you’re talking down to them.

But how do you know you’re dealing with a solution-aware buyer and not a problem-unaware buyer?

Well, start with the buyer.
What do they already understand?
What are they still unsure about?
What do they need to know before they can confidently say yes?

That’s where the best copy usually lives.

Raise your hand if you can spot an AI-written sales page before you’ve even finished the first section 🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏽‍♀️

I’ve been auditing this stuff lately, and it’s made me think differently about what AI is actually changing for copywriters.

The words are easier to get.
The knowing WHAT THE HELL to say in the first place is still the hard part.

That’s the bit I don’t see AI replacing anytime soon.

You are wasting your time on a full-scale sales page if you’ve not sold this offer atleast three times.

And this is coming from someone who gets paid to write copy for a living.

At the moment, all this offer’s landing page shows are the current testimonials (as of today; I’ve completed my sixth, waiting on two for feedback) and the FAQs.

The bare bones to really see if I could sell this offer before actually spending the time, money, and resources to develop the sales page.

This isn’t the traditional launch in the sense, but I am treating it as a way to let more people learn about this offer AND actually get this sales page out.

Also hoping this “series” keeps me accountable.

Do you have a launch or sales page coming out?

But here’s what nobody’s asking:
do you actually know how to talk about your offer? To sell it, specifically online?

Because here’s what I keep seeing:

People aren’t struggling to own their positioning because don’t know how to talk about it.

They don’t know what actually makes someone buy it in the first place.

So....they default to selling the deliverables. the calls, the docs, the deck.

Instead....of the transformation???
The actual thing people are paying you for.

Look at your offer.

I mean, REALLY look at it.
See what people are actually taking away from it, instead of just the deliverables.

Because nobody’s paying anyone for just a deck, I promise you that.

And if you’re wondering why someone who writes copy for a living is so passionate about this?
Well, a conversion rate of 100% means nothing if only one person saw it🤷🏽‍♀️

If you want people to actually see your offer (and decide if it’s right for them?) you have to learn what’s truly transformative about it and learn to sell it.

And if you’re strugling to figure it out + talking about your offer/product transformation?

Watch me write my Wednesday copywriting newsletter, write a sentence about tokens, realize I don’t actually fully understand what tokens mean, and spiral over how much people pay for them.

Yes, I probably should’ve known this earlier but hey, im not paying for Gen-AI anytime soon (never saying “never” because that’s a failsafe for the universe forcing me into a direction I don’t want). by @mariajohnwrites

A quick way to tell if an offer is ready for a proper sales page:
You can answer these three questions without guessing.

→ Why is someone buying this right now (not later)?
→ What problem were they already trying to solve before they found you?
→ What almost stopped them from buying?

If those answers still feel fuzzy, it’s usually a sign the offer needs more conversations, not more copy.

And inspired by:
1. The Google doc sales page that helped me sell 19 case studies prior to the full-fledged one you see.
2. The non-sales page I have for my sales messaging workshop (but now that I’ve completed five of them, writing it out is on my very long to-do list).

I think social media has quietly convinced a lot of business owners that engagement = success.

But engagement doesn’t pay invoices.

Someone can read your post, click your site, skim your offer, and decide to hire you… without ever leaving a like.

The internet is full of silent buyers.

Which means the better question to ask after posting isn’t: “Did this perform well?”
It’s: “Did this move someone closer to buying?”

I tend to ramble about messaging and conversions like this in my newsletter (this is from an edition earlier this year).
