One of my episodes on Decorate or Renovate!? I spent one day helping this couple decorate their townhouse before they listed it for sale. They invested about $3,500 in a few new tables, lighting and accessories. The result? They sold their home to the very first buyer who walked through. But my favourite part happened afterwards…When they found their next home, my friend Gail asked if they were planning to renovate.Their answer?“No. We have all the things Maria picked out for our makeover. We’re going to decorate instead.”❤️ That’s exactly why I believe everyone is getting timeless design wrong. So many homeowners jump straight to renovation when better decorating is often all they need.Watch this week’s YouTube video, “Everyone Is Wrong About what’s actually Timeless in Interior Design,” to see why. Everyone says the white kitchen is “over”… but this is how trends actually fall.A beautiful idea becomes popular. Then it gets copied, simplified, stripped of the details that made it beautiful—and eventually, we’re all tired of looking at it.But does that mean the original idea is no longer timeless? 👀In this week’s episode, I’m breaking down 5 popular design trends and asking the question that matters: trend or timeless?Comment WATCH and I’ll send you the full episode. by @mariakillam

Everyone knows when a kitchen, bathroom, or fireplace looks dated 🤷🏼‍♀️What most people don’t know is whether that is what is actually making their home feel wrong 🧐After helping homeowners decorate more than 20,000 homes, I’ve learned that many of the renovations ⚒️people are planning could have been avoided with better decorating 🖼️🪞📚🏺🌻Some rooms absolutely need renovating. Many just need someone who knows the difference. This knowledge gives you a superpower that most people don’t think about at all. Because most people see dated kitchens and bathrooms and come to only one conclusion: blow them up 💣 and while people with lots of money can do that 💸there are also a lot of people with beautifully renovated kitchens and bathrooms with homes that are still not decorated, and who still have ceilings filled with rows of runway overheads everywhere 🙈And missing the glow that only lamps 💡can achieve at night 🫠Comment PLAYLIST and I’ll send you my Decorate or Renovate playlist. It might save you from renovating a room that never needed it in the first place 😏 by @mariakillam

Everyone thinks a timeless bathroom comes down to choosing the right tile. It’s not. It’s the combination of your vanity, countertop, faucet, lighting, mirror, flooring and colour palette that determines whether your bathroom still looks beautiful 10 years from now—or feels dated the minute the next trend arrives. The expensive mistakes happen when you choose each finish one at a time instead of creating a plan first. That’s exactly why I created my 5 Must-Do Steps Before You Renovate Your Bathroom guide.Read it before you order a single tile or faucet. It could save you thousands in expensive do-overs.Comment BATHROOM and I’ll send it to you. by @mariakillam

The most timeless LVP is still a light to medium brown—and yes, warmer orange undertones 🧡 are making a comeback alongside the return of cognac furniture. One of the biggest mistakes you can make? Choosing flooring from a tiny sample.Always look at installed photos before you buy so you can see how the colour and pattern read in a real space.Timeless flooring isn’t about following trends. It’s about choosing a floor that will work with your home for years to come.Comment FLOORS and I’ll send you my Wood Flooring Guide to help you choose with confidence. by @mariakillam

If choosing paint has ever left you feeling confused, second-guessing every sample, and completely overwhelmed… this is for you.The truth is, paint isn’t the problem. Choosing it without understanding undertones is.That’s why so many homes end up feeling “off”—even when every finish looked beautiful on its own in the showroom.Once you understand undertones, decorating becomes so much easier. You’re no longer guessing, hoping, or crossing your fingers that everything will magically work together. That’s exactly why I created my Colour Boards and Neutral Colour Wheel—to give you a system you can rely on with confidence.Comment SYSTEM if you’d like more information about my Colour Boards.Comment WHEEL if you’d like to learn more about my Neutral Colour Wheel. by @mariakillam

I just flipped through a magazine that just arrived, featuring five very neutral homes. And across all five homes, I spotted exactly three pieces of art. 😳🤦🏼‍♀️One of them was wildly colourful, hanging in an otherwise black, white and trendy slatted wood dining room—because apparently, if you’re going to include art at all, you may as well make it carry the entire house.Honestly, people might be more afraid of art than they are of colour. Why are we so comfortable leaving walls empty?Art does not need to be expensive, profound or deeply meaningful. It just needs to make the room more beautiful.Comment MEANING and I’ll send you my post, **Why we Believe Art Must Have Meaning by @mariakillam

Everyone can see that their bathroom or kitchen is dated. Everyone can see dated flooring or that the fireplace is from another era. But almost no one realizes that the reason they don’t love their home has nothing to do with any of it.More often than not, the rooms people want to renovate simply haven’t been decorated. That’s the difference between decorating and renovating—and it’s exactly what my Decorate or Renovate!? series is all about.Every one of these makeovers took just one day, this living room, 4 hours 😳 (not an exaggeration)Comment WATCH and binge a few makeovers. You might look at your own home differently by tonight. by @mariakillam
