LCM or HCF? 🤯If you’ve ever guessed, this reel is for you. Most students don’t lose marks because they can’t find LCM or HCF.They lose marks because they don’t know WHICH one to use in word problems. So here’s a simple 3-step process šŸ‘‡šŸ”¹ Understand the questionšŸ”¹ Filter the informationšŸ”¹ Choose the right toolNo shortcuts. No memorising tricks.Just clear thinkingšŸ’¾ Save this for examsšŸ‘©ā€šŸ« Parents: this is how you should teach, not rushšŸŽ’ Students: use this for EVERY word problem#math #wordproblems #middleschoolmath #numeracy #mariamspeaksmath by @mariam_speaks_math

Most students memorise squares the hard way- as 20 separate facts with no connection between them. But there’s a pattern hiding in plain sight, and once you see it, you can’t unsee it. Every square number is just the previous square plus the next odd number. Start at 1 and add 3 → 4. Add 5 → 9. Add 7 → 16. The odd numbers carry you all the way to 400.Alternatively, you can use this formula to get your next square- n² = (n–1)² + (2n – 1)This is Part 1 of the series on memorising your squares — pattern first, cheat code second, memory trick third.Save this. You’ll want to come back to it.#mariamspeaksmath #math #mathematics #learnmath #middleschoolmath by @mariam_speaks_math

Learning math is like listening to an epic story. If you skip a few chapters, you won’t know who the characters are. It’s always best to go one chapter at a time. #mariamspeaksmath #math #mathematics #learning #teaching by @mariam_speaks_math

When your child gets stuck, your instinct is to help immediately. But solving it for them the second they’re stuck might be the fastest way to make sure they forget it.Here’s why: a fact handed over with no effort attached is the easiest thing for the brain to forget, there’s nothing holding it in place. But when you let them sit with the confusion for even a minute, their brain goes searching for the ā€œwhyā€ on its own, and that search is exactly what makes the understanding stick. This is rule six of our ā€œTeaching Ordinary Math, Extra-Ordinarilyā€ series: let them sit with it. Not because struggle is good for its own sake, but because it’s the thing that makes understanding last, long after memorising alone would have faded.Try this: next time they’re stuck, wait sixty seconds before helping. Tell me what happened.#mariamspeaksmath #math #teachingmath #learningmath #teaching by @mariam_speaks_math

In 1843, Irish mathematician William Rowan Hamilton was stuck on a problem for over a decade: could you build a 3D version of complex numbers? The answer was ā€˜No’. But what he found instead changed everything: a 4-dimensional number system called quaternions. He was so thrilled, he carved the formula into a Dublin bridge on the spot. Here’s the catch: every expansion in math costs you something. Quaternions gave us a new dimension, but we lost the rule that aƗb = bƗa.And this isn’t just theory, Quaternions are why your video game character rotates smoothly in 3D without glitching, and why spacecraft use them for navigation. But does this expansion of the number system go on forever? Not quite. More on that next time.#mariamspeaksmath #math #quaternions #numbersystem #numbers by @mariam_speaks_math

In my ā€œwhat numbers are we missingā€ series pt 4 video, I’d spoken about the proof for why (Sqrt of 2) is an irrational number. Here’s the proof why. Do let me know if this makes sense! #mariamspeaksmath #math #numbers #realnumbers #irrational by @mariam_speaks_math

Mathematicians once called āˆšāˆ’1 impossible. Meaningless. A thing that shouldn’t exist. Then it kept showing up, in equations, in physics, in engineering; and refusing to be ignored. So they did the only thing they could. They invented a new dimension to give it a home.Imaginary numbers. A second number line, perpendicular to the real one. Together they form the complex plane. This is the finale of the ā€œWhat Numbers Are We Missing?ā€ series. From a 43,000-year-old bone with tally marks to an entirely new dimension - This is the story of mathematics.Every time it hit a wall, it expanded. That’s not just history. That’s the mindset.Save this series and share it with someone who thinks maths is just calculation.#mariamspeaksmath #math #number #complexnumbers #realnumbers by @mariam_speaks_math

√2 looks harmless. It’s in every Grade 9 textbook. But this number once tore apart the foundations of Greek mathematics. The ancient Greeks believed every number could be written as a fraction. Then Hippasus proved √2 couldn’t. Ever. And according to legend, he paid for that discovery with his life. This is the moment mathematics split into two: rational numbers, which can be written as fractions, and irrational numbers, which cannot. Together they form the Real number line. Every point had a number, no gaps....Or so we thought.Part 5 is the finale of the ā€œWhat Numbers Are We Missing?ā€ series and it ends with a number that mathematicians once called impossible.Save this series. You won’t want to miss the ending.#mariamspeaksmath #math #numbers #numeracy #realnumbers by @mariam_speaks_math

Ever wondered why algebra suddenly throws letters at you when you thought math was all about numbers? šŸ”¤āž—Here’s the truth: numbers are the vocabulary of math’s language but letters are how we ask questions and describe patterns without repeating ourselves over and over.Think of ā€œxā€ like the word ā€œsomeoneā€ in a sentence. We don’t know who yet but we know exactly what role they’re playing.Once you see letters as placeholders instead of mysteries, algebra stops feeling like a foreign language and starts feeling like… well, still math, just smarter and shorter. 😌And here’s a teaser: not every letter plays the same role. Some change, some don’t. We’ll explore that difference in our next post. Save this one so you don’t miss it!Tag a student who needs to hear this. šŸ”– by @mariam_speaks_math

Whole numbers were perfect until division left a remainder. And that remainder forced humans to invent an entirely new kind of number.Fractions aren’t just slices of pizza. They are numbers in their own right that live between the whole numbers, filling the gaps division creates. But here’s the thing. Fractions filled MOST of the gaps. Not all of them. There were still points on the number line that no fraction could ever reach. Ever. The discovery of those numbers was so unsettling that, according to legend, the mathematician who proved it was thrown into the sea. This is Part 3 of the ā€œWhat Numbers Are We Missing?ā€ series. Part 4 is where things get truly surprising.Save this series so you don’t lose it.#mariamspeaksmath #math #mathematics #learnmath #fractions by @mariam_speaks_math

Zero feels obvious, until you realise that some of the greatest mathematical minds in history refused to believe it was a real number. The ancient Romans had no zero. The Greeks debated whether nothing could be something. It took until 628 AD when an Indian mathematician named Brahmagupta finally gave zero its rules and its rightful place in mathematics. And once zero existed, negative numbers followed. Numbers below nothing. Which mathematicians also called impossible, until temperature, debt, sea level, directions, made them unavoidable. This is Part 2 of the ā€œWhat Numbers Are We Missing?ā€ series. Every time math hit a wall, someone invented a new kind of number. And we’re still not done.Save this series — Part 3 is where it gets surprising.#mariamspeaksmath #math #mathematics #learnmath #numeracy by @mariam_speaks_math
