Did porn companies pioneer the attention economy? According to journalist Patricia Nilsson, the design features which underpin major social media platforms were first implemented by tube sites attempting to monetise user behaviour. She describes sex as a ‘byproduct’ in a creator-led landscape which values attention above all else. For more, listen to Top Comment on BBC Sounds. by @mariannaspringbbc
Should moderation of videos depicting death be stricter? Recent examples, like footage of the Ecuadorean priest who was killed by a crucifix, or a man being attacked by a tiger on camera, have reignited a debate about what we should see on social media. On the latest episode of #BBCTopComment, Marianna and Matt consider whether the pursuit of graphic and violent content is innately human, and ask if the bar should be adjusted for deaths which are politically symbolic. AI-generated images depicting the riots in France have left many of us questioning what’s real and what’s not. On the latest episode of #BBCTopComment, Matt and Marianna consider why generated characters who match French stereotypes like effortless class or bold style make altered photos more believable. They compare the online discourse to the reaction to last year’s Louvre heist. Listen now on BBC Sounds. by @mariannaspringbbc
When Ukraine hit several Yandex data centres inside Russia, viral posts began circulating suggesting there had been a noticeable reduction in social media activity by Russian bots. This narrative was fuelled by multiple high-profile accounts, and even echoed by President Zelensky - only it wasn’t true. After experts debunked the claims, Marianna explains why this ‘misinfo on misinfo’ was able to flourish, fuelled by an echo-chamber on Bluesky. As increasingly sophisticated generative AI software is rolled out to consumers, our feeds are being dominated by enhanced content. ⁣ ⁣ On the latest episode of #BBCTopComment Matt explains how 'motion transfer' or 'reskins' are enabling users to engage in reality manipulation.⁣ ⁣ He argues that independent creators become the biggest losers in a landscape where content is rapidly stolen and reproduced.⁣ ⁣ Top Comment | Listen on BBC Sounds by @mariannaspringbbc
Has social media become more harmful since Frances Haugen blew the whistle on Facebook? In 2021, Haugen leaked internal documents that raised concerns about the impact of the company’s platforms. But despite growing scrutiny and legal action, questions remain over whether tech companies are doing enough to address online harms. A new film, The Social Reckoning, directed by Aaron Sorkin, revisits the story of Haugen and The Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, whose reporting brought the social network’s closely guarded secrets to light. As The Social Reckoning hits cinemas, the whistleblower who inspired the movie joins Top Comment to discuss what’s changed since she leaked tens of thousands of internal Facebook documents in 2021. Considered by many to be the primary catalyst for much of the legislation and litigation currently targeting social media giants, Frances Haugen’s revelations have nonetheless been followed by an apparent acceleration by those same companies in pursuit of maximum engagement. On this episode, Frances talks about tech accountability in the age of AI, the increasingly punitive measures being taken against others who decide to speak out, and what she really thinks of Mark Zuckerberg. Meta has consistently disputed Frances Haugen’s characterisation of its policy, culture and safety procedures. Search BBC Top Comment on YouTube. #BBCTopComment YouTube into 🎥 by @mariannaspringbbc
When Frances Haugen leaked tens of thousands of internal Facebook documents in 2021, Mark Zuckerberg called her account a “mischaracterisation” which failed to “reflect the company we know.” Five years later, the prominent whistleblower says the Meta CEO’s rejection of evidence that social media can harm its users is a direct product of unilateral decision-making which is “insulated from consequences.” As new movie The Social Reckoning brings Haugen’s story to life, she argues that Zuckerberg continues to pursue isolation and resist accountability.
