🎯 Our PSSA Member @mariannelwalker responds to Luisa Roldan, one of sixteen overlooked sculptors featured in our 'Discovering Women Sculptors' book from the 17thC to the early 20thC.

🌟 Spanish Baroque sculptor Luisa Roldán (1652-1706) is the earliest woman sculptor documented in Spain. Roldán is recognized for being one of the few women artists to have maintained a studio outside the convents in Golden Age Spain.

🌟 Marianne Walker was born in Yorkshire UK 1970, lives and works in London. Walker's practice sits right on the cusp between drawing and sculpture. She uses paper-clay to make fragmentary body parts that are then drawn on using ink and pencil.

👉"Luisa Roldán had an amazing versatility, and works such as the life size Ecce Homo demonstrate her great skill in rendering subcutacenous fat and musculature in wood and her ability to capture a delicacy of facial expression"

"Amongst my favourite works are two severed heads of St. Paul and St. John the Baptist. Each portray the anatomical correctness of a decapitated head but with great energy and movement, these works have an enlivened quality that speaks to immediacy and collapses the linear time between her sculpting them and the historical moment she is depicting".

"I often return to Roldan’s The Ecstasy of Saint Mary Magdalene for its rendering of a subject in an ecstatic state, which is a live concern in my own practice, and its tenderness; she also resolves the practicalities of building a group of figures within the narrative of her chosen moment".

✨Very excited to share that I have been invited by @lairarts to participate in @printempsdudessin in Paris ✨

They are generously hosting me for a residency and open Studio event at Atelier 11 in @la_cite_falguiere the oldest purpose built studio complex in the world.

Now in the custodianship of @lairarts Atelier 11 was once the studio of Chaïm Soutine and I heard recently it was where he painted his famous ox carcasses. Modigliani carved his caryatid sculptures in the back yard and Brancusi also held a studio in the complex back in the day as did Paul Gauguin. The artist Mira Maodus held the studio until 2021 when @lairarts took over the care of this important site.

It will be an honour to participate in @printempsdudessin in this evocative site so central to the history of L’École de Paris and continue the tradition of international artistic exchange 🙏❤️

🔥Aflame: the democracy of drawing🔥

Sharing some long shots of the exhibition I curated at Bell House in Dulwich that closed last weekend, humble thanks 🙏 to each artist for lending their wonderful work!

Drawing remains one of the most democratic of all artistic mediums. It is accessible and affordable as well as being highly agentive, allowing the maker to express what captures their mind and eye through the metabolic processes of the heart and hand. Here, drawing is expressed across two and three dimensions as a manifestation of deep time, a sculptural tool and an act of enlivening, as well as an apotropaic prayer and an expression of sexy love. So, in answer to the question “Where do we go from here?” Defiantly, we draw.

A few years ago I started leading a group called Drawing Circle, we draw together online every Saturday morning and it is a constant joy!

A very lovely day in the @britishmuseum drawing collection on Friday with @janine_hall_j9 and @subonfanti ✨

I normally choose Redon (I mean, come on!) but this time went for a stunning drawing by Holbein and another by Dürer. Heaven! About an hour for each, so much fun.
