Galeria Foco is pleased to participate in @sp_arte for the first time, where it will present a solo exhibition by Maria Appleton (Lisbon, 1997). The presentation is an adaptation of her installation Formas de Reexistência, originally shown at Appleton BOX in Lisbon last year, curated by Pierrick Baudouin.

“Um espaço fechado. Uma sala enterrada, talvez mesmo uma caverna.
O ar saturado, a escuridão, o peso do silêncio — alguma coisa parece alterar a passagem do tempo. Sob os nossos pés, a terra húmida e vibrante. O que esconde o solo? Tudo o que lhe deixámos, claro; mas também sem dúvida toda a matéria do mundo por vir. Os dois confundem-se no instante, de imediato se desenlaçam, para perpetuamente recompor o presente.”

“A closed space. A buried room, perhaps even a cavern. The saturated air, the darkness, the weight of silence — something seems to alter the passage of time.
Beneath our feet, damp, vibrant earth blankets the floor. What does it hold? Everything we have left behind, and all the matter of the world yet to come. The two entwine in the instant, unraveling immediately, endlessly recomposing the present.“ Pierrick Baudouin, 2025

“
The staircase leads down into the cavernous basement of the gallery where Appleton has arranged a constellation of works which vary both in size and form of presentation. Dreamlike, each work could in fact be the fragment we are left with of a dream when we wake up. Like inner existence, dreams follow different spatiotemporal logics from “waking” life: the remains of survival, in the words of the title of the free-standing section of what the artist describes as a discarded shop window displaying the sihlouettes of undergarments. The latter is in fact also a subtle, yet heavy, reminder that fabric is the most intimate of materials, a second skin.
