"Whenever one person stands up and says, 'wait a minute, this is wrong', it helps other people to do the same." (Gloria Steinem)

Gloria, Betty Friedan, and other women of the post-WWII generation, used media and writing to push the confines of the authoritarian male prison in which the roles of women were defined. Reading their works had a profound effect on how I, other women of my generation, our daughters and granddaughters now approach the world. They let us know that it was okay to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our brothers in the world, and claim our rightful space.

The McAuley Mercy sisters who included Friedan’s “Feminine Mystique” in our 1970 Senior Religion curriculum were subversive feminists who empowered the women they were educating to stand up for themselves without male “permission.” by @marie2738

I just saw this, in the wake of Dolly’s passing, and it seems appropriate:

“There are these talismanic artists, who, as much as they meant to us while they were alive, as they’re leaving the planet, we turn toward the fullness of their living in this new way, and we see, “Oh!, you’ve offered us a way to be. You’ve never demanded that we respect you. You weren’t shoved down our throats at school…You were just there, shining.” by @marie2738
