I bloody did it! Well we did, as no one does this in a vacuum, but as someone very wise, who I adore and admire deeply told me on Thursday evening, this win is about me too. Kin winning Debut Cookery Book at the Fortnum and Mason awards was a moment of visibility I have pretended to ignore I wanted, because often Global Majority people have to manage expectations to avoid the more frequent disappointments. I wanted this win, and I beyond ecstatic that I got it. I want to give massive shoutouts and props to Irina @balkankitchen and @mangal2restaurant for their work in sharing the food and culture of their own diasporic histories. It was honour to be alongside you on that shortlist.

Kin was very nearly a book that did not come to fruition, but with @rumatkinson and @millysreilly being the most excellent hand holding duo, it did. There were many tears, many breaks and some serious pragmatism when I said I wanted to give up at 95% of the way there, and meant it. My mental health took a very serious nosedive for the entirety of this process but that last hurdle was the biggest to climb. Writing exposes you to truths whether you’re ready to meet them or not. I had buried my grief out of necessity but each time I wrote it was laid bare, a warring confrontation I am only really processing now. I miss them. The essence of them are embodied within the pages of Kin evermore, just as the ancestors are, and my first thanks are to them. May the world know and love you, even if only a little. Their sacrifice and safety are the springboards of which allow me to fly, how high is the only question I hear them whisper to me in the winds.

To @angelahuii for catching my pre win, no music dance moves - the vibes are always vibing, and for catching that top bag hand over to my love - love you boo @dannyglozier. To every single person who worked on this book, many who are now kin, my friends and family who already were. She’s here, and she’s even more beautiful than I dared to dream of.

It was a mighty long time ago I shared on here that I was soon to write a book that I had fantasied about for years. Life really lifed and the dream became something I feared, something that felt insurmountable, but looky here, it would appear I just about managed to climb that mountain. Did I think I would? No, but determination and surrounding yourself with those who want to see you soar did. I did it because we did it. To each and every one of you very special humans who has stood with me on this journey, who has allowed me to be vulnerable, encouraged my softness, I thank you! Making a lasting little slice of legacy for my mum, dad and brother, and my hilariously cheeky and loving babe makes my heart so full I can burst, and cry. There’s been a lot of tears, there will be some more but Kin is finally (nearly) here. June 6th, a whole 2 days before my mum would have been 66! Maybe 6 is now my new magic number.

New authors have to work extra hard at convincing the big dawgs that they’re worth investing in, so if you’re willing and able, please throw caution to the wind and preorder Kin. I’ll be forever grateful and likely cry while holding your hand in thanks. @particularbooks , I found my literary home in you, and you’ve made it a very cosy one, along with the @penguinpress family. The stunning Sankofa bird and the book design by @emma.make , the tangible and sensual photography by @christiancassiel , with the styling of intimate and lengthy dinner parties by @bakedbybenji and props that I wanted to keep by @tabhawkins. To @jounwinagency and now @colwillandpeddle you gave me Milly and I will never not be grateful for her, and you all, and @rumatkinson , your patience… no words. There have been many other hands that have graced this creative process - these pages are all yours too.

This week on Beyond the Pass we’re joined by @marie_mitchell_, British-Caribbean cultural practitioner, writer and cook whose work sits where food, community and storytelling meet.

Her debut cookbook Kin: Caribbean Recipes for the Modern Kitchen won the Fortnum & Mason Debut Cookery Award 2025, and she’s a regular on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch and contributor to The Guardian, Eater and Harper’s Bazaar.

We’re so excited to have her with us!

James beard award winning author. Feels cute. Won’t be deleting later.

Jetlagged and joyful at the airport again (!), so I’m going to take a moment to soak all this up because I cannot quite articulate how special this weekend was, yet.

In the meantime, the deepest thanks to both @particularbooks books @w.w.norton for making the work, and giving me so much freedom and input. It shouldn’t be a privilege but I now know that it’s one of the few you can be afforded in publishing. To everyone who worked on the book, you know who you are and it would not have been this special without you. Each of you invested in this project with your whole-self and I’m forever grateful. To my friends for being patient with my silences or supportive with your words, reading passages and feeding back. Your gift of time or wisdom is what I live for. To my loves, this is your win too as if you didn’t indulge, I wouldn’t be free to fly. To my families, chosen, in-laws and blood. And then, to the community. For buying the book, saving it to buy, ordering it to libraries and returning it late, to writing about it, coming to events, thinking about coming to events, having it out on your coffee tables and kitchens. It all matters. It all creates change.

I’ve been nailing life offline (enjoying it) but absolutely failing (not engaging) online quite so much. I won’t make promises I can’t keep, so I won’t pretend I’m a new woman but I will be sharing some sweet moments that were important to me as they’re important to people I care about but first…

It was a pinch me moment when Kin won at last years @fortnums awards, a sweet moment that will forever be etched in mind as I now prepare to pass the torch. So to be asked to judge the awards this year, only a year out from winning, felt even more momentous.
We often talk about the need for diverse voices in a room, and we know the why in theory but seeing it in action will forever be some of my proudest work. A seat at the table, a promise I made to myself only a few short years ago.

It’s not only about making sure we all look different, it’s really about making sure we all think differently, to allow for the most broad spectrum opinions to be whittled down to a shortlist, and finally a winner. Of course, those thoughts are subjective, but I am deeply proud of working with the incredible Fortnums, the work they are trying to do to be better in this space, at making sure the doors are opening to those who may not see that the path IS for them. For my fellow judges, what an honour, both my mind and spirit was enriched by those debates. To the shortlisted, you have already won, as the wise @mark_diacono said the shortlist is King (or Queen), so I truly hope you know that! I cannot wait to celebrate with you all. by @marie_mitchell_

For Marie Mitchell, the kitchen has always been where love is made legible. The daughter of Jamaican immigrants, Marie’s cooking is animated by a desire to honour and understand the recipes passed down through generations.

That devotion found its most expansive form in “Kin,” her debut cookbook published by Particular Books in the UK, and WW Norton in the U.S., which maps the Caribbean and its diaspora through food, tracing the connections it builds between temporal moments and distant geographies, between home and wherever home has become.

But Kin didn’t arrive in a vacuum. It grew out of years of community-building: first through Pop’s Kitchen, the bi-monthly supper club Marie launched with her parents in 2015, and later through Island Social Club, the beloved rum and roti residency that became a home for Caribbean food culture in London. We got to sit with Marie and hear how these experiences shaped her journey in the culinary space.

Today, through her writing, recipes, and ongoing work as a food advocate, she continues making the case that Caribbean foodways are among the most rich, complex, and vital culinary traditions in the world.
