Reflection, in Marie Matusz’s practice, is never a copy but a medium. Grounded in philosophical, sociological and linguistic research, her work returns again and again to how the images of our time are made and perceived.

For @freitaglab R E F E R E N C E Pre-Launch Event, Matusz treated the warehouse as a found exhibition design. The shelves of stacked pallets, heavy with used tarps, were lit to rise like a city at night, while the light across the floor sank to dusk.

At the centre ran one long surface of black plexiglass, doubling every light, every guest, every plate and glass. As above, so below. The food and drinks of the evening’s collaborators bloomed across it like the lilies of Monet’s Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies (1899), while performers moved through its reflection, so that every craft of the night appeared on one shared surface.

The black is also the colour of petroleum, the raw material behind plastic, the shadow FREITAG has spent three decades answering by cutting up what the road already used once. On this dark ground, life kept blooming, reflected into a new dimension.

Like Reference itself: elevation through attention, every material and every craft recognised as precious. 🖤

🔬A closer look at detection technology

@mariematusz kicked off her three-week residency at @cern as part of Connect India, visiting experiments and laboratories focused on particle detection technology. She’s meeting engineers, physicists, and theorists at CERN whose work — spanning manufacturing, assembly, and experimental and theoretical physics — is shaping searches for phenomena like dark matter, the Higgs boson, and undiscovered particles.

Connect India is part of the Connect collaboration framework between @artsatcern and @prohelvetia. Connect India is organised in partnership with @prohelvetia_newdelhi, @icts, and @scigalleryblr.

Marie Matusz is one of the two selected artists for Connect India, alongside Kashmiri artist @moonisahmadshah.

👋 Welcome to @cern, Marie Matusz!

@mariematusz has begun the first part of her Connect India dual residency at @cern, before her time at @icts_tifr in Bengaluru this autumn with fellow resident @moonisahmadshah.

Marie Matusz works with sculptural installations, sound, text, and film. Her practice is informed by an intensive theoretical engagement with philosophical, sociological, and linguistic questions, exploring the conditions of perception, visibility, and spatial experience.

Through her residency Matusz will develop Body in the Dark, a project that marks a continuation with previous explorations of the relationship between body, light and field. Her time at CERN will allow her to draw in depth on particle detection, specifically the conditions in which particles are registered and the traces they leave in a field – inferred from pattern and absence in near-total darkness.

➡️ Meet Marie Matusz @mariematusz - Connect India dual residency artist

Marie Matusz’s practice centres on critical engagement with forms and their inherent meanings, influenced by in-depth research into philosophical, sociological and linguistic theories. Her work manifests these concepts through minimal sculptural installations, sound works, writings and films.

For Connect India, Matusz will continue her ongoing explorations of the relationship between body, light and field by investigating their interaction when light becomes a physical quantity – measured and modelled at scales beyond human intuition.

The project Body in the Dark will draw on particle detection, specifically the conditions in which particles are registered and the traces they leave in a field – inferred from pattern and absence in near-total darkness.

Currently on view in Berlin: “core“, featuring Marie Matusz and Kristina Nagel. The gallery is open today, Saturday, from 1–6 pm.

Marie Matusz‘ series “Long Ago, Tomorrow” stages sculptural scenes within glass vitrines, where Marie Matusz arranges plant-like forms, steel pedestals, and geometric elements in relation to one another to challenge the experience of seeing. Through the grey-tinted glass, the sculptural arrangements appear shielded and unapproachable, while at the same time the surrounding space is reflected in the glass surfaces. Objects, people, and architecture thus overlap, intertwining into unstable configurations that continuously reshape themselves through movement and shifting perspectives. Interior and exterior, proximity and distance, visibility and concealment become relational dimensions that reveal the mechanisms of perception.

Matusz deliberately works with these spatial structures and their displacements. Her practice is grounded in a critical engagement with forms and their inherent meanings and power structures, closely linked to the architectural conditions of the exhibition space: volume, sightlines, and perspectival relations create a choreographed order in which vision is both guided and interrogated.

The systematic arrangement of “Long Ago, Tomorrow”, reminiscent of early modern cabinets of curiosities or museum displays, makes the instability and construction of representation tangible, demonstrating how time, material, and structure shape perception. At the same time, the works with their glass casings evoke collective experiences of distance, alienation and the absence of direct encounter. Their reflective surfaces recall screens and the fleeting nature of perception and circulation in a world where information, commodities, emotions, and values are digitally mediated.

Join us this Friday (20 February, 6–9 pm) in Berlin for the opening of “core“, where Kristina Nagel and Marie Matusz explore how perception is structured, guided, and shifted — and how the visible emerges as a dynamic, ever-changing constellation.

Both positions make the instability of representation tangible within the exhibition and show how image, material, and space generate conditions that shape the act of seeing.

Marie Matusz (*1994 in Toulouse, FR) works with sculptural installations, sound, text, and film. Her practice is informed by an intensive theoretical engagement with philosophical, sociological, and linguistic questions, exploring the conditions of perception, visibility, and spatial experience. She incorporates materials such as steel, acrylic, and mirrors to create fragile arrangements in which volumes, sightlines, and reflections guide and shift the viewer’s perception. The exhibition space functions as a structuring element, where inside and outside, proximity and distance, as well as position and perspective, become tangible relational dimensions.

An open, process-oriented dialogue between theory, material, and space forms the foundation of her work, and individual works emerge as part of spatial constellations in which narrative fragments and material presence develop their own poetics.

Marie Matusz: Shift
22 November 2025 – 24 January 2026

@mariematusz

“Matusz draws from theatre set design, from the constructed horizons of city planning, and from the ambivalent status of decorative façades: structures that appear load-bearing but conceal their true purpose, patterns that resemble Rorschach tests, and surfaces that pretend to be what they are not. Here, industrial eros opens onto intimate ambiances, suggesting that the smallest material shifts can destabilize an entire spatial logic.
[…]
Shift invites us to inhabit these tensions rather than resolve them. It asks us to consider how objects shape us, how we live among their cycles of wear and renewal, and how an attentive reading of surfaces, scars, and shadows might reveal the unearthed feelings embedded in our conflicted relationship to time, architecture, and the engines of production.”

Marie Matusz: Shift
22 November, 2025 – 24 January, 2026

@mariematusz

"Many works in Shift emerge from the assemblage of factory leftovers, laser-cut metal, CNC-etched composite wood, sandblasted surfaces. These procedures mark the pieces with traces of machinic exhaustion: endlessly repeated cuts, dense flows of data translated into gestures, patterns that feel both overworked and strangely animate.
[…]
Throughout the exhibition, motifs of circles, windows, and orbital forms signal Matusz’s long-standing interest in cosmological thought, particularly the speculative horizon of Russian Cosmism. Figures such as Nikolai Fedorov imagined architecture, technology, and systems of care as forces capable not merely of shaping life, but of mediating the thresholds between preservation and decay, continuity and disappearance. In this context, architecture becomes a vessel that absorbs the traces of lived time, while technologies become indexes of human desire to prolong, archive, or even reanimate what slips away. These histories of radical maintenance, cosmic projection, and the impossible wish to steer time inform the exhibition’s attention to what is absent yet palpably present, what is preserved yet continually reconfigured."

#ZurichArtPROFILES What’s the most interesting misinterpretation of @mariematusz’s work?

Open till January 26, 2026, her solo exhibition ‘Shift’ at @bluevelvetprojects, the artist offers a candid glimpse into her world.

👉Swipe to read our Q+A!

In ‘Shift’, Matusz deepens the haptic dimension of her practice through sculptures and wall works shaped from veneer, metal, and other construction-derived composites assembled with domestic care. These new works carry traces of use and machinic authorship, forming an ambivalent space where structure meets ornament and industrial fragments open onto intimate ambiances, revealing how objects shift between what is seen and what is felt. Building on the legacies of phenomenology and brutalism, the exhibition invites viewers into a radical environment, half-theatre set, half-factory, where perception acts less as recognition than as resonance.
