It took me four trips to Antarctica before I finally created the images I had imagined.

For years, photographs of Antarctica have inspired me. Images of leopard seals underwater, seals, and incredible moments of life beneath the ice… Scenes that once felt almost out of reach, yet shaped my imagination for years.

For an entire month, I tried, failed, and started over. Condensation, temperature changes, camera settings… Every day brought a new challenge.

Today, I’m simply happy to finally share these underwater images from Antarctica with you. They’re only a small part of what I was able to capture, but they’re also something I kept to myself for a long time, like a treasure. A huge thank you to @pola.ryse and everyone who has been part of this journey. by @marin_lr

In recent years, I’ve had the chance to explore the Antarctic Peninsula through several journeys, each one unique, each one shaping my perspective on these lands a little more.

I’ve traveled there for scientific missions, exploration, and even tourism, and each time, on every vessel, I encountered unique people.

I am deeply grateful for these experiences and for the people I met along the way.

Can a place so remote become so familiar? I suppose I’ll have to return a few more times to find the answer.

There is something fascinating about returning to anchorages, straits, and channels… places I had held in my mind for years, and observing how they evolve over the seasons, over time.

Each time, I’ve dreamed of this journey for days. The first time, I learned a year in advance that I would be going; the second time, it was the day before departure; and this time, just a month ahead.

So who knows… maybe tomorrow, in a month, or in a year, I’ll set off again? Thanks @pola.ryse @fondationtaraocean @maliziaexplorer @underthepole and many many more. by @marin_lr

It’s already been over a month since we returned from Antarctica. Coming back from this kind of expedition is always a shock: in barely 30 hours of travel, we’re back home, as if nothing had really happened. And yet, the memories slowly begin to settle.
They are shaped by what we remember, but also by the photos and the words we bring back.
During two months on the boat, I had the chance to meet dozens of incredible personalities. How can such different people adapt to life at sea, far from everything, come together, and end up becoming friends? That’s probably the main reason why we love this kind of adventure.
So what do you take away from two months in one of the most remote regions from home? The penguins? The cold? I mostly remember the encounters, the moments on deck, talking about everything and nothing with a group of friends… One thing changes: our environment.
The most beautiful moments we shared will be the ones without images, without ā€œproof.ā€ And yet, whenever I’m asked to show photos from Antarctica, I instinctively show the most striking shots—whales, seals, and other species we encountered along the way.
So here they are, after some reflection, my favorite shots from this winter spent on the Antarctic Peninsula.

On our way.
The sailing research vessels MALIZIA EXPLORER and WHY during the final days of their journey during one Antarctic season that was marked by logistical challenges, rough weather and sunny days, deep diving, cold water research and numerous wildlife encounters.
But above all, the work was characterised by respectful human cooperation, a wonderful team spirit and never-ending amazement at the fascinating wonders of nature.

Antarctica Is Beyond Words - Our Third Antarctic Expedition
After two intense months at the edge of the world, Malizia Explorer has returned to Ushuaia, concluding her third Antarctic expedition of the season alongside Under The Pole and their vessel, the WHY.
A leopard seal circling our cameras beneath the surface.
Humpback whales surfacing beside the hull.
Orcas hunting in the waters of the Drake Passage.
Penguins porpoising between ice floes.
Moments of pure magic and powerful reminders of what is at stake.
This film captures the full journey from departure in Ushuaia to scientific dives, wildlife encounters, life at sea, and the emotional return to port. It is more than a voyage. It is a testimony to exploration, science, and responsibility.

Malizia Explorer is now safely back in Ushuaia and preparing to set off on the second half of the mission. Before doing so, this is a moment to revisit the final days at sea.

The team took shelter from a storm in Paradise Bay, a place that feels aptly named for the environment they are within. Forced to pause until the storm passes and the journey home could begin, they watched, listened, and learned from nature in its quiet and sometimes loud normality and inherent balance. Soon after, carrying these impressions with them, the crew turned north.
On the long journey home, through the extreme conditions of the Drake Passage, reflection began on what was witnessed, what these experiences meant, and what it is that is so deeply worth protecting. Strangers only weeks ago, the crew became connected through a shared love for the Ocean, for this remote region, and for the lives it holds and sustains. Distance and closeness blurred, and kinship formed, much like in the nature that surrounded them.
After 22 days at sea, spent getting to know a world of immense ecological importance, vast, pristine, and distant, yet profoundly connected to all life on planet Earth, words continue to fall short, however, crystal clear remains the conviction towards protection.

Merci.
