Marina Kappos’s exhibition Piercing the Veil at SHRINE in New York draws inspiration from walks through Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, where sculptures of mourning women standing watch over tombs became central figures in her new paintings. These widows appear as veiled spectral forms that emerge and dissolve into one another — psychic doubles suspended between worlds — shaped by Kappos’s lifelong fascination with the experience of being an identical twin.

The concept for my new paintings began percolating during my time in Paris last year, inspired by my many walks through Pere Lachaise Cemetery. I was moved by the sculptures of grieving women that I encountered there. They seemed to hold a power in their sadness, but also great beauty and remembrance as they stood guard over many of the tombs. I took many pictures and thought I would share a few.

Where do creative ideas come from? The initial concept for this series of paintings came from my time in Paris last year, walking in Père Lachaise cemetery and spending time at the Louvre in the Italian Renaissance wing. But ideas are shared, connected to the zeitgeist, and as I was making these paintings, similar ideas began to mushroom up in popular culture and fashion like the new Schiaparelli collection featuring veils, and Rihanna’s epic photoshoot in W magazine. A veiled woman is both powerful and mysterious, stretching through time in many forms.
