Marino Arcaro’s new work brings the inimitable poetry of Manoel de Barros to life.

At resonanzraum, Rafael Marino Arcaro premieres “what i learned from manoel de barros:”, op.28 — a MusikFonds commission for soprano and six soloists.

A singular voice in Brazilian poetry, Barros has long been an artistic and spiritual guide to Marino Arcaro. Based on his 1998 “Retrato do Artista quando Coisa”, the work brings his way of seeing into music.

Marino Arcaro conceived and conducts the project; his music has been performed by the LSO and LPO, and he studied closely with George Benjamin. It brings together soprano Hannah Dienes-Williams (@hdieneswilliamssoprano), Ensemble Utak (@ensemble.utak) and guest soloists. A contemporary-music specialist and 2026 Equilibrium Young Artist sponsored by Barbara Hannigan, she was chosen for her precision, expressive colour and sensitivity to text.

Together, they bring Hamburg a century of Latin American music— all world or German premières. Funded by @musikfonds.de

Dinorá de Carvalho in ihrer radikalsten Phase wieder entdecken, neben Marino Arcaros fesselndem neuen Werk — live aufgezeichnet beim Abschlusskonzert der Tour.

Rediscovering Dinorá de Carvalho at her most radical, alongside Marino Arcaro’s spellbinding new work — recorded live at the final concert of the tour.

At o-ton Köln, “Kunstlieder aus Lateinamerika” ends with Carvalho’s later music. Now undergoing a revival, this pioneering Brazilian composer developed a striking language between spectral sonorities and atonal expressionism. Her works from the 1960s and 70s are heard in new arrangements for soprano and chamber ensemble by Brazilian composer and conductor Rafael Marino Arcaro.

A programme highlight is Marino Arcaro’s “what i learned from manoel de barros:”, op.28 — for soprano and six soloists, setting the poetry of Manoel de Barros to music.

In this richly colourful concert, Ensemble Utak (@ensemble.utak) is joined by guest soloists including flautist Ingvild Ness (@ingvildnesss), IEMA Ensemble 25/26 member, and cellist Stefano Cucuzzella (@_nondescript_crafty_channel_), who has performed with Deutsche Oper Berlin, RSB and Staatskapelle Dresden.
