For Todas las manifestaciones del agua, I drew on the work of Gaston Bachelard to bridge painting and thought: the importance of reverie, and the psychological power of water as a way to approach the confrontation between nature and culture. Recently, I have been immersed in the work of Bruno Latour to develop these ideas further. How much has the framework of modernity changed the way we view nature and the projections we cast onto it? What are the consequences of this thinking for the natural world? The conflict, it seems to me, is shaped by the economic filter of capitalism, the conversion of its mechanisms into moral values and by how we understand our role in the world, along with the power, rights and duties we believe we have.

This new body of work uses landscape to investigate how modern thinking has replaced nature and how, borrowing from Baudrillard, the modern world has been built on a simulation of nature. by @mariodavalos_

Great atmosphere at @thearmoryshow. Caribbean art was well represented, curated by @contemporarychica @heliconiaprojects was the only Dominican gallery this year. Over the last two decades, the Caribbean has become a creative force in the world, and I think its syncretism is the tool that makes such singular visions possible. Antonio Benítez Rojo described the Caribbean as a meta-archipelago, a region with no center and no fixed borders, always repeating itself beyond its shores. This absence of a fixed center makes its thinking unique. The large, central regions of the world tend to look inward. The Caribbean islands are always looking at the horizon. by @mariodavalos_

@mariodavalos_ reflects on the tension between our simulation of nature and the increasingly constructed, “civilized” world we inhabit.
Through his work, he considers the idea of progress as an unstoppable train—one we are constantly compelled to follow for fear of being left behind. In that pursuit, what do we lose? And how far do we move from our connection to wilderness, nature, and the untamed?
