“Earning trust in these spaces isn’t something to be rushed. Photography was a way in - a quieter, more respectful way to spend time, to talk, to listen, to be present long before I brought in a camera crew.” - Marion Bergin

‘All these fields, I could see, had been reclaimed or claimed for the first time from beneath the great raised bogs, only islands of which now remained. And the sense I had is that this land, rushy and wet, didn’t want to be claimed, didn’t want to be coerced into human intention and purpose. It was as though it resented its rebirth or its abortion back into daylight. And the best thing therefore to do with it would be to say a Requiem Mass on it… “ John Moriarty

Two months ago I ran away because winter in Ireland….(not the fun part before Christmas, the other bit) and I’ve spent several years designing my life in such a way that I can do that without everything falling apart.

I’d visited Marseille before and felt the persuasion. It really is a city of contrasts and I like that. The image above is a shot from my balcony at Vallon Des Auffes where I have coffee in the am and drinkiepoos in the evening. Looks calm doesn’t it. It’s not. It’s the noisiest place I’ve ever lived and I live in Dublin 1 so that says a lot. That road is one of the busiest in the med. To the back of where I live is a persistent humm of pneumatic drilling from the five lads that abseil down the cliffs to do daily maintenance work. There’s also a rogue wind called ‘The Mistral’ which lashes everyone out of it for about four days every two weeks. It’s code red level but they just get on with it because the French don’t militarise the weather like we do. So yes, it’s lively but it’s incredibly rich.

I love the contrast of new and old, the balmy beaches and the chopped up seas, the fragrant North African culture and the boujis coffee shops and boulangeries, the hard concrete blocks and the foliaged outcrops of the calanques. We’re just coming out of winter and, like everywhere, the city is starting to thaw into Spring. Two months only scratches the surface yet I leave soon.

Is Marseille the new Berlin? No. I don’t think so. But I think I know where the new Berlin is.

In recent years I’ve found solace and solas in creative and personal land based practices as I orienteer this phase of my life. These questionings and explorations that call from place deep in my DNA have led to paths crossing with beautiful souls of all generations, drawn energetically and creatively to these things that feel like home.

My collaborations with @seachto_ started at the meeting point of beauty. Their considered floral practice told me everything I needed to know to come together. Some months ago, myself Ingrid and Ciara @waitbythewell , their friend exploring the traditions around Ireland’s healing wells, came together to make a short film that was shown in the @rha.arts. We let go of outcome and met by St. Catherine’s well on the side of a busy road at the entrance to a demesne. Our film Si Si Si meaning “Fairy, Fairy, Fairy” emerged from gathering as our ancestors did to sit, reflect, contemplate and heal through the curative waters in the well.

It was a restorative experience in the months coming down from the hectic fairground of Summer. I felt fully in my body and filled up. We sat there by the edge of the real and spirit world and, in a sense, we three were fairies too.

The film journeys through that experience and was screened on a loop with a spiral animation by @gabrieltx (I’ve wanted to animate a spiral for a long time because they animate my life path). The immersive soundscape was created by @ruairi.ceol .

Greetings from Marseille where I’ve been in a little creative cave getting lots of thinking and planning done. Ive been told that Marseille is the new Berlin and now I get to see if that’s actually true because the lovely folk at the Berlin Irish Film Festival (which is in the old Berlin) are kindly flying me there along with some other filmmakers for a couple of days. SWIMirl will be screening on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the fact that the title is SWIMirl and it’s about Dublin’s sea swimmers, it’s actually an abstract architecture film. It was commissioned by the Hong Kong and Shenzen Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism. Created in collaboration with architect Rob Bourke and produced with Shane Hogan, it shows the squat concrete structures dotted along the coastline that facilitate ease of entry to the water and the ephemeral stories and people we encounter there. I was in the water directing with cinematographer Kev L Smith for the making of this film with and I loved the challenge of swimming around trying to choreograph movement and camera with real people.

The woman is Jackie from Clontarf where I grew up, one of those elegant ladies that glide into the water, not a puff of breath lost. I think she’s beautiful. The two little boys are my nephews Connor and Evan. Connor is an outgoing little charmer child and Evan is gentle and introspective, both incredibly sweet boys in their own ways. The day we shot he was the outgoing brave guy, totally comfortable with the cameras and the water and Connor was a little bit shy. I like that we captured that. taken in Vallon des Auffes Rive Gauche by @marionbergin_

Today is the start of The Chinese Year of the Horse. I didn’t grow up around horses but for as long as I can remember they’ve had this magnetic draw, much like the sea. The least few years have taken me far and wide to document people across Ireland and their horses. Above are some shots I have taken along the way.

The energy for The Year of the Horse
— Freedom
- Drive and independence
— Change, travel, and expansion
— being seen, stepping forward, taking leadership
— Adventure and spontaneity

As I write this from Marseille, it already feels like a good year 🐎 taken in Ireland by @marionbergin_
