👉🏼 Feeling 'blah', 'meh' or just a bit flat?! Check out my ✨ NEW JOURNALING RETREAT GUIDE! ✨

More than anyone, I know how hard it is to start and maintain a meaningful journaling practice:

🙃 Life gets in the way
🙃 You're afraid of what you might find, or even
🙃 You struggle to be honest with yourself.

I've spent a LOOOONG time sitting on this idea of how to give you the structure, advice and encouragement to put pen to paper (probably TOO long, lol).

So rather than keep spinning on it, I decided to pop it into this at-home retreat guide, aptly titled 📝 WRITE NOW 📝

In 1 day (or a weekend if you want to spread it out), I'll walk you through how to set yourself up for journaling glory 🏆

From what tools you need, to prompts to even a simple 'morning, noon & night' schedule – because who has the brain power to make any more decisions, amiright?! 🫠

It's $20 (incl. GST) and available over on my website: drmarionpiper.com.au/shop 🤠

✈️ The week that was in… San Diego 🏝️

A last minute adventure to California that included Mexican food, friends, coffee, walks, workouts, work, and chill time 💫

Sometimes you have to jump at an opportunity to grab it 🥹

🤌🏼 Did you know @thefinderskeepersmarket has FOOD?! 🍝 Pull up a seat at 👵🏽 NONNA’S TABLE 👵🏽

I took along Melbourne’s own Art Evangelist, Anna from @art__matters__ who, like me, dressed in pink unprompted 😂

We were welcome with a Prosecco on arrival from the legends at @fin.wines, and sat down to enjoy scrumptious antipasto platters by @viagianlu 🤤

Then, the stars of the evening: a trio of pasta dishes made using sauces by @sorry_nonna 🍝

And as if we weren’t already bursting at the seams, they finished us off with traditional Sicilian cannolos by @cannoleria_au 💥

Big thanks to the FK team for such a delicious adventure!

Do yourself a favour and don’t miss it when it comes through again! 🤝

If the rut is ‘rutting’, pull up a seat 🪑

A ‘creative rut’ feels fkn AWFUL. No energy, no motivation, no desire to tap into what usually lights you up. It’s a space that’s heavy, like tar, and seemingly goes on F O R E V E R 🕳️

The more you try and pull yourself out of it, the deeper you go 😮‍💨

Have you ever heard the phrase THE OPPOSITE IS THE MEDICINE? 💊 I tried to find who said it but came up blank, yet it reminds me of the Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skill called ‘Opposite Action’.

💡 You intentionally do the exact opposite of what your emotional urge tells you to do to reduce the intensity of an unwanted emotion.

Here’s where it gets interesting… 😏

The opposite of a rut isn’t just creating—it’s a LIFE that feels dynamic, progressive, and engaging ✨

What does that look like?

🚀 MOMENTUM 🚀
Moving forward is easy. Small actions build energy, instead of draining it.

🤡 NOVELTY 🤡
Fresh routines, new challenges, and unexpected ideas.

🌊 FLOW 🌊
Deep immersion in what you do. Your skills balanced with exciting goals.

🌱 GROWTH 🌱
Actively learning or evolving. Not choosing to stay safe in an unfulfilling comfort zone.

Sounds like a lot, huh? That’s just the ‘rut’ talking.

If I was sick and tired of being in a rut, here’s what id do to activate all four traits at once👇🏼

I’d go to an art gallery I hadn’t been to in a while, in a different part of Melbourne, with a new journal, and talk to the gallery staff about the current exhibition.

✅ Small actions
✅ Unexpected ideas
✅ Full immersion
✅ Learning about Art

Art not your thing? Sub in a bookstore, restaurant, gig, or library.

Ruts only exist because life has become too rigid and mundane. Break the pattern—and set yourself free 🕊️

How does ✨CREATIVITY ✨ fit into the ⚒️ FUTURE OF WORK ⚒️

IT IS EVERYTHING.

What AI has shown us is that it’s not your capacity or skill to PRODUCE the work anymore that’s valuable—it’s the idea, strategy, and distribution of it.

The deeper down this rabbit hole we go 🕳️ 🐇 the more I retreat back to what I learned in art school:

Start with your lived experience: What matters to you? What did you learn? How did you survive? What keeps you up at night?

Choose a medium: Words? Paint? Music? Public speaking? Food? A product? A whole business?

Trust the creative process: Prepare (gather info, research, brainstorm); Incubate (put it down, let it percolate); Illuminate (wait for the A-ha moment); Evaluate (use critical thinking and select feedback to verify); and Execute (make the damn thing); Iterate (refine, refine, refine); and Share (give it to the world so it can live and evolve).

Traditional jobs are dying—creativity never will 🫶🏼

Not a cry for help. A confession: living a creative life is a LOT 😮‍💨

No one wants to talk about the hard shit but it’s the failures that show you who you REALLY are.

What matters most is how you FEEL on the journey—everything else is just noise 🧡

Stop trying to create your best work for your followers—cocoon it instead 🐛 ✨ 🦋

Everything of value I’ve created was made offline then shared with the world when I felt it was ready.

I hate to break it to you but only other creatives care about the process, and even then, it won’t work in the same way for them as it does for you.

Privacy, not visibility, is the key to your work’s next creative transformation—make the thing FIRST, then come back and tell us what happened 👀

✨ BUILD A LIFE SPACIOUS ENOUGH FOR YOU TO CHANGE YOUR MIND WITHOUT DESTROYING IT 🫶🏼

Life, lately, has been a mix of adventure, quiet, friends, food, and deep thinking 🧐

I’ve come so far and there’s still so much to do!

But a level of contentment has arrived that I wasn’t expecting—and I see now the specific contribution I am to make next to this world.

The challenge, then, is finding the balance: between push and pull, Art and commerce, action and rest.

Let’s make iconic choices 🤝
