Tonight is the opening of the Suggestivism show at @nucleusportland ✨

My piece, “Moon Shadow,” (12x12 inches, made entirely out of paper) will be on display along with work from a selection of truly incredible artists.

River of Life, paper sculpture.

This piece pays reverence to prana, the universal life force which flows through all of us. That which animates you is the same as that which makes my heart beat. The identical force enlivens trees, whales, cows, flowers, insects, birds... we are all formed from the same source. Remember this and act with love.

Remembering my mom today, on her 80th birthday. I made this urn with the help of my friend @brookhartceramic and I buried it at the foot of my grandmother’s grave, so my mom’s ashes would be surrounded by her kin.

Grief is a portal you enter and are forever changed by, but I have found that it also offers gifts if you are willing to meet it. Witnessing my mother’s death was the most profound spiritual teaching I’ve ever received. It taught me that impermanence is life’s only promise to us, and that yes, I really am going to die one day. Everyone and everything will, and that’s actually totally okay.

We are but temporary beings in this vast mystery. What else is there to do with our time but be kind to one another and love this Earth.

My piece for the 11th annual Salut coaster show at @nucleusportland🫀

This little 4x4 inch piece is a mix of watercolor, embroidery, and paper sculpture. It’s about walking the path of love and compassion towards all sentient beings, which in Buddhism we call the way of the Bodhisattva. In order to do this, we must first extend compassion towards ourselves and heal our own hearts. Our own pain and trauma can actually be a gateway into deeper love and understanding, and I created this piece as a talisman towards that goal.

My piece “Honu” for the @pangeaseed show Common Waters, opening tonight at @archenemyarts 🌊

Honu is the Hawaiian word for sea turtle. For more than 100 million years, sea turtles have navigated the world’s oceans, surviving mass extinctions and helping maintain the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. Today, because of human activity, 6 of the 7 sea turtle species are now threatened or endangered due to plastic pollution, commercial fishing, habitat destruction, climate change, and poaching.

My goal with my art is to reconnect people to the ancient relationship we have with nature and the other beings we are blessed to share this Earth with. My hope is that all of us humans feel more compelled to protect all the beauty that is at stake of being lost forever.

I feel completely in line with the mission of Pangea Seed, which is to use art to bridge the emotional gap between science and public awareness by transforming public issues into stories people can see, feel, and connect with. If you aren’t familiar with their work, definitely go check them out.

I grew up playing violin but due to a nerve impingement in my neck, I had to stop in my twenties. I can only play for. about 15 minutes before I start to feel pain, so I rarely pick it up anymore. Sometimes I’ll go almost an entire year without opening my violin case.

When my friend, colleague, and mentor @offf_leash (Alvin) asked me to play a song to start the night at the opening of his retrospective show, I knew exactly what song to pick. I’ve played this song at both of my grandmother’s funerals, and I played it a few weeks ago when I buried my mother’s ashes. Alvin and I are kindred spirits, and one of the many things we connect about as humans and artists is the awareness of death and the impermanence of the human body.

I hadn’t performed in front of a group so large since I was a child playing classical music at recitals. Rather than playing a complex, technically impressive song, I chose a song that feels as comfortable as an old worn T-shirt. Playing this simple yet deeply beautiful fiddle tune meant choosing expression over performance, which is a theme I’m working on in my own artwork as well as my life (because they are one and the same).

This piece was a commission for a client who had a special connection with hibiscus flowers and hummingbirds. I can recall exactly how big it is, but I think it’s at least four feet tall, all hand cut paper. 🌺

Some spring things 🌱🪲

I took IG off my phone about eight months ago. It’s been really helpful to spend less time scrolling, but I also realize that sharing my work is an important part of my creation process- the loop is completed when the work gets to be seen and perceived. So I’m going to try to get back into the rhythm of sharing this part of my world, while staying true to my purpose as an artist. It’s a tricky balance but I feel ready again to try.
