I’d like to think that my paintings can provide a space for connection.

Looking back at Phenomena, a work from 2025, I can see things in it that I wasn’t quite aware of at the time.

My interest in the in-between has grown partly because it has become a way of understanding my own identity. Across my art practice and professional life, I have been navigating between cultures, languages and different systems of knowledge. Increasingly, that space between them has become a site of enquiry.

Phenomena already carried many of these ideas: body and landscape, surface and depth, and forms that don’t quite belong to one place or another.Interestingly, the work came first and the language to describe it developed later.

This is what I hope painting can do; make visible the connections between things we tend to understand as separate.

There are quite a few new people here, and my work has shifted over the past few years, so I thought it might be a good time to reintroduce myself.

My practice developed alongside many years in medicine and medical imaging. I don’t think I initially understood how much that experience had shaped the way I see. Ultrasound trained me to look through layers, to search for subtle differences in texture and density, and to understand an image through what is visible as much as what remains uncertain.

Those ways of looking gradually found their way into my paintings.

For some time I described my work as sitting between body and landscape. That is still very much there, but my attention has shifted to the space between them and, more broadly, to what happens between different states, materials and ways of knowing.

This interest also comes from my own experience. Moving between countries, languages and professions has made the in-between a familiar place for me. For some time, I probably thought about those spaces in terms of displacement, but I now see them as spaces where things can shift, connect, and become something else.

In the studio, this happens through painting, drawing, projection, writing, erasure and layering. Medical images might sit beside photographs of rock, fragments of text or marks taken directly from the landscape. I don’t necessarily know where these encounters will lead when I begin, and this is what keeps me interested. My practice is increasingly an enquiry into the uncertainty of these interstitial spaces and mostly what might be found there.

Created during my recent artist residency at The Corridor Project by charcoal ‘frottage’ against the surface of a large moss-covered boulder. The initial marks were received more than created but as I worked, the forms began to echo bodily structures well known to me: pathways, cavities, rhythmic lines, microscopic fields.

I have been thinking deeply about landscape not as scenery, not as background, but as a living body. A matter that breathes, records, and carries memory. A surface with its own pulse.

For me, Earth’s Pulse (as I am calling this work) sits between body and terrain, between observation and touch. It is a field of marks, but also a field of attention. A reminder that the landscape is not passive. It holds us, records us, and shows us how closely we belong to it.

When less is more was the topic of conversation in my newsletter this week. We reflected on the relevance of keeping things simple and less complicated in order to make room for what is really important.
If this conversation is something that interests you, I invite you to join my newsletter. In it I share reflections on topics that I reckon interest us all, behind the scenes and updates from the studio.
There is a link in my Bio to join.

There are several ways to explore my practice, from visiting my Sydney studio to seeing a work that n your home. And if you live further away, we can still have a conversation and take a closer look together.

Swipe left to learn more.

The studio is a unique opportunity to get an insight into my practice. Here you will find works in different stages and experiments happening along the way. You are welcome whether you’re considering an original painting or simply want to learn more.

Studio visits require an appointment.

I can also bring works to you. We can arrange a home visit or an art sleepover where a painting stays overnight. This gives you time to see the work as the light changes in your space and the opportunity to discuss it with the rest of your family. I’ve found that choosing an artwork this way can become a lovely shared experience.

This experiences are available depending on the location and the work you’re considering.

We can also go digital and arrange a mock up of the painting in your home using a photo provided by you. Videos are another great way to show texture and colours when distance is an issue. I can create a personalised video for you or if you prefer, we can arrange a video call.

A selection of my paintings are available from @hake.house
Visiting the gallery gives you another opportunity to spend time with the work in person and on the beautiful gallery setting. The team at Hake can tell you more about the available work, organise commissions and help with any questions you may have.

Solo exhibitions bring together a body of work usually resulting from months of research and idea development. On the other hand, a group exhibition places the paintings next to other artists and these relationships can bring different aspects of a painting into focus. They are great to get a feel on how a painting can potentially look in your space as it will be displayed with your own collection.

Of course online represent a big tool for every artist. Here on Instagram I share some snippets of my practice but the real connection and content sharing happens on my newsletter and my blog.

Straight off the studio floor, literally.

An accumulation of colours, textures and marks that suggest something familiar without defining exactly what it is.

For this work, I played with the idea of multiple focal points where there isn’t one particular way of looking at the painting so that each time you return to it, you might notice something different.

Some ultrasound concepts used as resources for this work include: absorption, noise, focal zones and scattering.

Today I felt honoured to join a gathering of artists and thinkers whose practices are deeply engaged with health. I came home thinking about the question at the heart of our conversation: what is our role as artists in health environments?

Having worked in medicine and medical imaging for many years, I know how much attention goes to what needs to be assessed, understood, treated and ‘fixed’. I also know how much of a person’s experience can remain outside those conversations.

As an artist, I wonder what we can make room for. But entering these environments also means asking who gets to make decisions; whose ideas shape the work? How much room is there for patients to influence what happens, especially in settings where they may have little control?

I’m still working out what this means for my own practice. I’m left wondering what this role might look like: facilitating an exchange, making space for someone’s experience, or bringing a question that opens up a different way of thinking. I want to bring what I know, while being open to having my ideas changed by the people I’m working with.

Thanks for including me in this wonderful conversation @thecadfactoryofficial

The meaning of the studio:

I’ve spent much of my professional life moving between medicine and art. Two fields that might initially seem quite separate, but in the studio these different experiences come together.

My current research explores the in-between as a space where new understandings might emerge, and in many ways, the studio has become that space for me.

It’s where the habits of observation I developed through medical imaging meet the uncertainty and experimentation of painting. I don’t choose one way of thinking over another. I let them coexist and influence each other. Sometimes these connections become clear in the work, and other times I only recognise them in myself.

For the first time I am allowing one of my paintings to exist beyond the original.

Under The Weight Of Summer was created through a project centred in transformation. It felt fitting that this work should continue its journey in another form allowing its story to travel and inspire further.

Limited edition of 30
25 x 20 cm mounted on white board.
(Initial and numbered at front)

To celebrate this very special occasion I am offering complimentary world wide shipping.

The beginning of this year moved quickly. I was juggling exhibitions, collaborations, deadlines, travel, and new work unfolding at once.

Then the quiet second half of the year arrived. The pace shifted, and it took me longer than I expected to settle into it. At first, these slower days felt empty, but as much as I love to be busy, I’ve come to recognise I was in need of them.

During quiet studio time, I can look without needing to resolve. It’s when I read, walk, collect, experiment, and allow myself to make something that may lead nowhere. Ideas don’t feel pressure to become something.

I think we often speak about an artist’s practice through what can be seen, but there is another part of the practice that is much harder to show.

The looking, the wondering, the time in between, gradually filling the tank again.

Before a painting leaves the studio, almost anything is possible. I can turn it around, scrape it back, cover it over. I can arrive one morning and decide that something I thought was finished needs another layer. A mark can disappear. A colour can shift. The painting remains in conversation with me.

Then comes the transition. Edges are considered. The back is finished. Hanging hardware is attached. It is photographed, measured, documented, wrapped and eventually carried out of the studio.

These practical rituals seem insignificant, but something important happens through them. The painting crosses a threshold. It moves from the private, free space of making into the world, where I am no longer beside it to explain it, change it, or decide its future resting place.

Boundless Light has made that journey, and it is ready to continue without me.
