Okay, so I may have gotten a little carried away with paper on this one.

For this skirt, I’m stitching three designs from my machine’s built-in library across the two front tiers. I pinned paper cutouts of the designs onto the sample/toile to play around with placement. Then I printed each design, cut them out as stencils and did a sample stitch-out on a scrap of the final fabric to see how it will look.

The real test will be using the stencils to mark exactly where each design will be stitched.

Is there an easier way to do this? I tried to find one. The internet had lots to say about centering a single design and basically nothing about mapping out several designs at different angles. So paper and scissors it is.✂️ If you know a better way, please tell me in the comments.👇🏽

Somewhere along the way, a lot of us were told to make the sensible/practical choice, which is probably why I spent years choosing clothes that made “sense” instead of clothes that made me happy.

I’m pinning embroidery on a skirt today just because it makes me happy.💞

This old fitted sheet had one job: be my tiered skirt sample.✂️ This skirt has 6 pattern pieces and I didn’t want to waste my good fabric🫤

Loved playing around with the embroidery placement…and honestly? I’m loving this color combo way more than I expected. I kind of wish it was a wearable sample.😩 Should I wear it anyway!?!

To all of my sewing and creative friends out there, I need your help on this one. 🧵

I’m adding embroidery to a tiered skirt and I’m stuck on the best way to mark the placement so everything lands exactly where I want it.

Do you have any tried and true marking tools you’ve used? Water-soluble pen? Heat-erasable pen? Chalk or a chalk wheel? Something I haven’t even heard of?

Also, how would you go about stitching out only a portion of an embroidery design that you are unable to edit?

Let me know in the comments and if you know someone who embroiders, send this their way. I need all the help I can get. 😅

Moment of truth: Dug out the embroidery unit for my Husqvarna Designer Diamond for the first time in literal years (at least 5 years🫣) Plugged it in, held my breath, hit start and… IT STILL WORKS?! 😮‍💨

This is for my Stash Roulette embroidery challenge. I’m remaking the Havana Nights skirt and since my existing embroidered fabric didn’t have enough yardage, I’m making my own.

Next up: figuring out placement on the tiered skirt and seeing what we can come up with. Stay tuned!👀

At times I know exactly where to start and what I need to do, other times I have absolutely no clue (especially when on a time crunch)😓

But no matter what, I always learn something new and discover something about myself. The path is rarely a straight line, the important thing is to keep going and never stop trying.❤️

Gave myself an impossible deadline and my cutting table (and now my floor) has seen things. Nothing like a self-imposed deadline to turn my sewing studio into a crime scene. 10/10 would not recommend…but would absolutely do it again.🥰🧵

This is my stash! The shelves, the floor piles, the hand-me-downs and thrifted finds tucked under my cutting table that I swear I’ll upcycle “someday”.

If you’ve ever felt a flicker of guilt looking at your own fabric stash. I see you and I’m right there with you. So instead of pretending it doesn’t exist, I’m making it the whole point.

Okay, I need a second to just look at this. 😍 This matching top and skirt set was made for a Havana Nights themed fundraiser that was sewn entirely from my fabric stash in just 7 days.

After everything it took to get here, seeing the whole outfit come together like this feels SO good. Worth every late night.

Bonus: Both pieces work just as well as separates, the top and the skirt each have a whole second life styled with other things in my closet.
